MAXIMO RECOVERS, WINS CIRCUIT IN CLARK

CEBUANO junior cyclist Luis Miguel "Igi" Maximo bounced back from his first-day debacle and topped the circuit race of the fourth leg of the Philippine Premiere Cycling league Tour of Clark at the Clark Freeport Zone last Sunday.

Maximo finished only second in the morning race, losing by 44 seconds to a national triathlete because of fatigue and lack of sleep.

The 15-year-old cyclist of Springdale School was caught in the Manila traffic the night before and arrived late in Subic.

He and his father Jonathan, who accompanied him, also needed to assemble the bike and only slept for a few hours before his early morning race.

"After what happened in the morning race, he took a nap and loaded on carbs for his 2 p.m. competition," said Jonathan via e-mail.

He added because Igi lacked rest, they had to strategize differently.

"He hasn't completely recovered so the strategy was to conserve energy during the race. He hid behind the group to reduce air drag and go for a very quick sprint in the last few meters towards the finish line," Jonathan added.

Maximo bested Manila racers Gino Ongkiatco and Allen Santiago, who settled for runners up honors.

"I am happy with the result. I knew I can bounce back from my loss in the morning race. I was just groggy in the ITT race due to lack of sleep," Igy said.

IGI FINISHES IN 2ND PLACE IN ITT OF TOUR OF CLARK

CEBUANO RIDER Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo fell into a haze of fatigue and finished second place in the Individual Time Trial event in the junior division of the Tour of Clark last weekend at the Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga.

Maximo, the two-time champion of the event from PAREF-Springdale, finished the race with a time of 15 minutes and 14.90 seconds in the 10.6 kilometer event which served as the fourt leg of the Philippine Premier Cycling League.

He finished 44 seconds slower than winner and RP junior triathlete Allen Santiago, who crossed the finish line with a time of 14:32.91. Rudolph Carolino of Dagupan City was in third with a time of 15:45.47.

Maximo believes that he could have done much better at the event and attributed his sluggish performance to fatigue and the hectic travel time from Manila to Pampanga.

However, Maximo offered no excuses and promised to do better in the Circuit Race and the Road Race.

In a Circuit Race, all the cyclists start simultaneously, called the “massed start”. Break aways and drafting are some of the tactics to consider in this type of race. First cyclist to cross the finish line wins the race. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio

CEBUANO junior cyclist Luis Miguel "Igi" Maximo snagged second place in the Individual Time Trial of the Tour of Clark, the fourth leg of the Philippine Premiere Cycling League, last Sunday at the Clark Freeport Zone.

Maximo, the 15-year-old cyclist of Springdale School, finished 44 seconds after RP junior triathlete Allen Santiago.

Maximo posted 15 minutes 14.90 seconds in the 10.6-kilometer event. Santiago registered a better time of 14:32.91. Rudolph Carolino of Dagupan City finished third in 15:45.47.

Maximo's father Jonathan said Igi could have finished better had he not been overcome by fatigue.

"He was slower compared to his previous local ITT races here in Cebu. Fatigue was the culprit. We underestimated the travel time and traffic from Manila to Clark. We arrived at around midnight and had to assemble the bike so Igi had to sleep by 2 a.m. and wake up early for the 7 a.m. race. Wala pa kasugod ang lumba, na laspag na," said Jonathan.

Igi, however, said he was satisfied with his results.

"It was a good thing I was able to hold on to second place in spite of the unfavorable conditions. Bawi na lang next time," said Igi.

CEBU’S Luis Miguel "Igi" Maximo of Team Maximo, the back-to-back junior champion of the Philippine Premiere Cycling League (PPCL) series, will be defending his title in the 2010 Tour of Clark today.

The event, which covers 74 kilometers for the junior race, is the 4th leg of the PPCL.

Unlike its previous legs, this race will have three stages—individual time trial, circuit race and road race—scattered over two days.

Igi said he is both excited and at the same time a bit tense for this event.

The first two legs which Igi has won were all one-day races held in Paranaque last January and in Laguna last February.

Igi, 15, who is supported by his school, Springdale, and OZ Racing, has prepared for this event by competing in a number of local races to improve his endurance as well as to familiarize himself with the different type of races.

As he goes up against a tougher field which includes junior cyclists from Luzon and other parts of Manila, Igi's chances will lie on his body's ability to rest and recover in between events. /CORRESPONDENTs MARS G. ALISON and Jonas Panerio

IGI MAXIMO GOES FOR FOURTH-LEG TITLE

TWO-TIME junior champion Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo, 15, will defend his title in the fourth leg of the Tour of Clark today at Clark Freeport Zone, Pampanga.

Considered as the Philippine Premiere Cycling League series, the event will have an Individual Time Trial (ITT), a 38-km. circuit race and a 25-km. road race.

Igi’s father, Jonathan Maximo, said unlike the previous two legs won by his son last January and February in Laguna, the fourth leg is now already spread over two days.

“They will have two days to do three stages—an ITT, circuit race and road race. And the junior category will have to cover a demanding 74 kilometers,” said Jonathan, who added endurance and recovery will play a vital role.

He is confident Igi will be able to be defend his crown after undergoing several training sessions. Igi also joined a number of local races to improve his endurance and be familiar with the different types of races.

Jonathan said Igi’s chances depend on how he will be able to cope with the stiff rivalry in the junior division, which is now getting tough with the entry of a number of cyclists from Luzon and Manila.

“This is the first time for Igi to race in Clark, thus the familiarity of the venue, transportation concerns from Manila to Clark, accommodation issues in Clark can take its toll on Igi’s preparation. Again, the main purpose of the participation is to learn and gain experience for future and bigger international races,” Jonathan said.

– BANAT NEWS

CEBU, Philippines - All that promising Cebuano junior cyclist Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo learned from the events he joined in the United States last summer will be put to a major test as he shoots for a grandslam feat in the juniors division of the “Tour of Clark” - the fourth leg of the Philippine Premiere Cycling League (PPCL) beginning today at the Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga.

After topping the first two legs, Igimax missed the third leg in Subic as he was still in the US during that time. His trip to the US went very successful as he landed at 14th place overal in the LA Marathon’s 5K run, placed sixth in the juniors action of the Redlands Bicycle Classic in California and then finished 21st in the juniors and 42nd in the men’s category 5 of the Los Angeles Circuit Race.

Aside from his exposure in the US, Igimax never stopped training when he returned to Cebu knowing that a more demanding battle is up for him. He joined several local races including the Cebu Summer 16km Individual Time Trial (ITT) in Catmon, the Danao City Triathlon and Uling Road Race in Naga against more seasoned pedal-pushers.

This weekend, the 15-year-old proud student of Paref-Springdale takes another shot at glory in Luzon through the two-day action under the TOC, thanks to the go signal given by his school and the support of his chief corporate backer OZ Racing through Zandro Fajadro and Maximax Air Conditioning.

Competing under the banner of Team Max1mo, Igimax will be dealing with two events today. First the 10.6-kilometer individual time trial (ITT), the stage 1 of TOC, and then the circuit race, which covers a total of 38 kilometers.

Tomorrow, Igimax will be going out for a 25km road race. He will compete all by himself, thus, it’s going to be a very difficult task for him as he has no teammate to act as his domestique.

Although a little bit optimistic, Igimax’s dad and award-winning sportsman Jonathan “Maxi” Maximo downplays his son’s chances of winning.

“This is another kind of race where endurance and recovery will be the key factors. The ability of Igi’s body to rest and recover in between events will determine his chances of winning or going up the podium. The decision making of Igi when to rest and attack in the race, considering that he has to conserve as much energy for the other events,” said Maxi Maximo.

“The junior field is getting very tough, with a number of cyclists from Luzon and other parts of Manila joining. This is generally a flat course race, with no uphill climbs. Igi is more comfortable in mountain/uphill routes due to Cebu’s terrain (practice venue). Thus, the chances of winning is not that much compared to the previous legs, even though he is a defending titlist,” added Maximo. (FREEMAN NEWS)

MAXI MAXIMO: A DAD FOR ALL SPORTS

Published in Cebu Daily News June 20, 2010 Sunday issue
by Mars G. Alison, Correspondent
Rick Gabuya, Sports Editor

It is easy to assume that an athlete could cope better if his family is also into sports.

Certainly an advantage, but also very challenging, according to Jonathan “Maxi” Maximo.

Maxi, 43, is not only a former varsity member of the University of San Carlos (USC) football team, but also sat as the chairman of the Cebu Football Association (CFA) for one term, which spanned four years.

To say that he influenced his three children to get into sports is an understatement. For this athletic dad is his children’s inspiration.

As a father, Maxi said it is a challenge to let your children play whatever sport they want especially when you are an athlete yourself.

“Somehow, as a father, you will always have an influence in their choice of sports because kids normally follow their dads but eventually they will find what they love so you have to let your children experience other sports. Bottom line is you give them your full support,” Maxi said.

This is why Maxi had no complaints when Igi shifted to biking and even accompanied his son to training and competitions.

“The feeling is different when you are in the background but I enjoy the moment and do not mind all the preparations. I get to travel, learn new things and meet other parents,” he said.

SPORTS AND LIFE

Maxi has always loved sports and competition so he encouraged his family to be sports oriented.

His wife Sheila, 44, also used to play soccer baseball for St. Theresa's College (STC) during her high school days.

“My children are so blessed to have him as a father because di jud sila ma-ing-ana if it weren't for him. He is a very good motivator. He brings out the best in them,” she said.

She added that Maxi has asked her to call his attention whenever she feels he’s pushing their children too much. Because for Maxi, life is a huge sports arena where challenges lurk in every nook and corner.

“It is better that they lose in a tournament rather than in life,” he would say.

But as much as he wants his children to excel in sports, Maxi said he’d rather want them to prioritize their education.

“There is no compromise in that, studies come first. They know that they should be a good student first before becoming a good athlete. They can always go back to sports after their studies,” Maxi said.

MESSAGES

For this special day for fathers, Maxi's kids want their dad to know how grateful they are to have him as their father.

His eldest daughter Ina, 18, is a football varsity of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila, where she is taking up Occupational Therapy.

“Dad, words cannot express how grateful I am to call you my dad. Like a pot, I started out as a clay, lifeless and sloppy. Then just like the pot maker, you gathered me up and molded me, shaped me and tried to perfect my imperfections. You exposed me to the fire so that I may be strong and durable enough to stand the cruelty of the world alone. As I went through the gruelling process of becoming a pot you were always there. Your hands guiding me and ever ready to catch me if I fall. You have done a wonderful job in raising me, Igi and Ica and a great husband to mom as well. I want you to know that everything I do and achieve is for you and mom:) I love you so much. Thank you for being my dad. Happy father's day!” …Ina

FROM FOOTBALL TO CYCLING

His only son Igi, 15, has shifted from playing football for Paref Springdale since first grade to cycling, wherein this early, he is already a back-to-back junior champion in the 2010 Philippine Premiere Cycling League (PPCL).

“Dad, first of all, happy Father's Day! Thank you for your support in everything I do. Because of you I have achieved so much at such a young age. One particular aspect is what we have accomplished with my cycling. If it wasn't for you I wouldn't be where I am today. I believe it is because of you that I am able to pedal harder and stronger than I ever thought I could. Dad, I love you just the way you are. Having you as my dad is the best thing that ever happened to me. Thank you and I love you!...Igi

STAR TRIATHLETE IN THE MAKING

Maxi's youngest daughter Ica, 10, may not be into any competitive sports yet but she has expressed interest in triathlon while she practices running, biking and swimming.

“Hi dad, happy Father's Day! You've done so many things to me and our family. Dad, you are a great dad to me. And you were always there for me. Like when I'm down, you cheer me up. When I'm having trouble with my homework, you help me get the correct answer. Thanks for being great, I love you and happy Father's Day!...Ica
