CEBUANO junior cyclist Luis Miguel "Igi" Maximo bounced back from his first-day debacle and topped the circuit race of the fourth leg of the Philippine Premiere Cycling league Tour of Clark at the Clark Freeport Zone last Sunday.

Maximo finished only second in the morning race, losing by 44 seconds to a national triathlete because of fatigue and lack of sleep.

The 15-year-old cyclist of Springdale School was caught in the Manila traffic the night before and arrived late in Subic.

He and his father Jonathan, who accompanied him, also needed to assemble the bike and only slept for a few hours before his early morning race.

"After what happened in the morning race, he took a nap and loaded on carbs for his 2 p.m. competition," said Jonathan via e-mail.

He added because Igi lacked rest, they had to strategize differently.

"He hasn't completely recovered so the strategy was to conserve energy during the race. He hid behind the group to reduce air drag and go for a very quick sprint in the last few meters towards the finish line," Jonathan added.

Maximo bested Manila racers Gino Ongkiatco and Allen Santiago, who settled for runners up honors.

"I am happy with the result. I knew I can bounce back from my loss in the morning race. I was just groggy in the ITT race due to lack of sleep," Igy said.
