UAAP TO JOIN ASEAN UNIVERSITY GAMES

GMA News.  Team UAAP will represent the Philippines in the coming 15th ASEAN University Games slated December 12-23 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

This was confirmed by Em Fernandez of Ateneo de Manila, secretary general of the UAAP’s 73rd season.

“We will field in entries in taekwondo, swimming, track and field and hopefully, basketball," said Fernandez.

A total of 18 sports disciplines will be contested in the biennial regional university meet, which include athletics, badminton, basketball, beach and indoor volleyball, cricket, football, golf, karatedo, taekwondo, swimming, table tennis and lawn tennis.

During the 14th edition of the meet in 2008, Team UAAP-Philippines bagged eight gold, 12 silver and 21 bronze medals from taekwondo, swimming and athletics, to finish sixth overall.

The taekwondo jins led the team’s medal haul with former Olympian Mary Antoinette Rivero of De La Salle University atoning for four gold, four silver and six bronze medals.

Other countries participating in the meet are defending overall champion Malaysia, host Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei Darrusalam, Laos and Cambodia.

The ASEAN University Games will be the first major international multi-event meet to be hosted by Chiang Mai since the 18th Southeast Asian Games held in 1995. - RCJ, GMANews.TV
