THE FIRST YELLOW JERSEY

Bicycling.com What would the Tour de France be without the yellow jersey? Until 1919 there was no jersey handed out to the winner. It was not until midway through the 1919 race that organizers heeded to the pressure of the press to make the race leader more visible. Fittingly, they chose yellow as the distinctive tunic, a nod to the color of their newspaper, "L'Auto." The first jersey went to Eugene Christophe, one of the top riders of his generation... RISING CYCLIST LEADS IN TEAMSIX ROAD RACE

CEBU’s rising junior cyclist Luis Miguel “Iggy” Maximo topped the mountain road race of the Cebu Cycling Teamsix Road Race in Uling, Naga City,Cebu.

Maximo first secured a silver finish in Stage One of the 27-km. individual time trial, clocking 48:36.83, which was won by Orville Tecson with 48:05.24.

Adonis Bohol settled for a bronze medal with 48:45.11.

However, Maximo was able to recover during the second stage as he topped the 16-km. mountain road race, which was mostly an uphill climb, unlike Stage One, which was generally flat.

Maximo won by clocking 44:17.5, followed by Adonis Bohol with 46:48.94 for second and Garry Fernandez with 48:13.1 for third.

Leading

In the first few kilometers, Tecson was controlling the race, staying in front of the group, setting the pace, but towards the middle of an uphill, Tecson unexpectedly slowed down, paving the way for Maximo who is used to uphills.

It was only Maximo and Bohol who were able to sustain the pace. Bohol was not able to catch up with Maximo’s pace during an uphill portion in the last part of the race until the finish line.

“Igi is a good climber due to his power-to-weight ratio. Small, lean body with good legs,” said Jonathan Maximo, Igi’s father in an email sent to Sun.Star Cebu.

Edge

Maximo said Tecson, who secured the stage title, was more into flat terrains. The race was able to determine what type of cyclist joined, whether an all-rounder of one who favors certain terrains.

“Igi then is a natural climber,” Jonathan said.

The next race will be in July, in time for the Tour de France, which is the most prestigious cycling race in the world.

JUNIOR CYCLIST Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo once again added another feather to his cap as he won the Cebu Cycling Team Six Road Race which was held last Sunday from Uling, Naga City to the city of Cebu.

Maximo, who was has been winning races left and right of late, finished with a total time of 1 hour, 32 minutes and 54.58 seconds to best runner-up, Adonis Bohol, who finished with a time of 1:35:34.05. Finishing in third place was Garry Fernandez, who had a time of 1:37:19.76.

The grueling race was made to determine what kind of cyclist the participants were and Maximo was made out to be a “natural climber.” The next race is slated for July.

The individual time trial started at the Naga Uling road and the Cebu south highway and wrapped up at the third bridge of the Naga Uling road with a total distance of 27 kilometers. Orville Tecson won that stage with a time of 48:05.24 while Maximo was 31 seconds behind.

Maximo though, struck back in the second stage which was a mountain road race spanning 16 kilometers. He made up the 31 second difference and finished in 44:17.75, besting Bohol’s 46:48.94, to grab the overall championship. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio

CONTADOR SHOULD STAY HOME

The Freeman Newspaper. By JV Araneta: In doping cases, it is the job of the national cycling federation, in this case, the Spanish Cycling Federation, to hear the case, make a decision and give out a sentence. It’s basically like investigating, deciding and finally sentencing your “dean’s lister” son for cheating in school. To say that sonny did cheat would be embarrassing to the family so the Spanish Cycling Federation believed in the “contaminated meat” theory, to the consternation of the Spanish beef industry and cycling community, and set Contador free... MAXIMO BAGS JUNIOR CROWN IN GRANDIA DE MAYO CYCLING

Published in Cebu Daily Newspaper on June 2, 2011 Thursday issue
by Jonas Panerio, Correspondent
Rick Gabuya, Sports Editor

YOUNG Cebuano cyclist Luis Miguel "Igi" Maximo again proved that his riding skills are far beyond his years as he captured the overall championship in the Juniors division of the recent Grandia de Mayo Cycling Road Race held at the southern part of Cebu.

Maximo traversed 216 kilometers in three different stages in just two days, becoming the youngest cyclist to cross the finish line.  He started off slowly, winning silver in the Stage 1 road race from Talisay to Alcantara losing to James Tiples, a 19 year old from Manila with a time of 2 hours, 20 minutes and 32 seconds.

Maximo rebounded by taking the Individual Time Trial title in 39 minutes and 33 seconds in a race that spanned Alcantara to Badian then finished the Badian to Argao Stage 3 in second place behind Tiples with a time of 4 hours, 9 minutes and 56 seconds.

Meanwhile, Jeoffrey Flores topped the executive class followed by John Gayatin and Art Lambo, in second and third place, respectively./CORRESPONDENT JONAS PANERIO
