CEBU’s duathletes leave today for this Sunday’s 2012 Asian Duathlon Championships at the Subic Bay Freeport.

Those joining the event are Triathlon Association of the Philippines (Trap) Cebu developmental team members Fredrick Yuan and Justin Chiongbian, Luis Miguel “Iggy” and Ana Patricia Maximo and lone Cebuano adult participant Elmo Clarabal.

Iggy will be competing in the junior men’s elite category and will be up against foes from Japan, Korea and Taipei.

“I expect this race to be very tough with the presence of several foreign foes. Whatever the results will just be a bonus for me at this time. This will be my first time joining an international duathlon competition. Finish the race strong. No DNF.

I never expected to be included in the PHL Duathlon Team. I was never a runner in high school. I guess being a cyclist and a football player helped,” said Iggy.

Now a student of the Ateneo de Manila University and a member of the Philippine Junior Cycling Team, Iggy has been included in the Philippine Junior Duathlon training pool.

His sister, 13-year-old Ana Patricia of Sacred Heart School - Hijas de Jesus will race in the youth 13-15 category together with Justin Chiongbian.

Yuan will be competing in the 11-12 years old Supertrikids category.

Elmo Clarabal, who got second place in the Xterra Off-road triathlon in Liloan, will race in the 30-34 age group.

CEBU, Philippines - Well-rounded Cebuano athlete Luis Miguel 'Igimax' Maximo snared a slot to Philippine junior elite team that will see action in the Century Tuna ASTC Asian Duathlon Championships set for November 25 in Subic Bay.

Igimax only accompanied his sister Ana Patricia during the SuperTriKids Camp and Competition at Plantation Bay Resort and Spa last week, but national coach Melvin Fausto found out that Igimax also has a potential to excel in duathlon.

After his assessment on Igimax, coach Fausto invited the latter to be part of the lean Phl squad of which the Cebuano talent readily agreed.

Being part of the Phl junior cycling team and a track and field varsity of Ateneo de Manila University, Igimax has to double his time in training so he can live up to expectations although he already showed a lot of promise in this two-in-one sport.

Last May, Igimax made a memorable debut in duathlon following a bronze medal finish in the second leg of the 2012 Powerade Philippine Duathlon Series in Daang Hari, Alabang.

Igimax’s sister Patricia will also be joining the ADC along with the Chiongbian brothers Justin and Yuan. They will strut their wares in the age-group division.

In the elite category of the prestigious ADC, over a hundred athletes from 19 countries have already confirmed their entries including from Japan, China, Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Syria, Iran Brazil, Australia, Great Britain, France, Denmark, Germany, Russia, Canada and New Zealand.

The participants are vying for slots to the 2013 Elite Duathlon World Championships in Cali, Colombia on July 26-27, 2013. (FREEMAN)
