CEBUANA CYCLIST DELIVERS IN IRONMAN 70.3 AS-PAC CHAMPIONSHIP

Published in The Freeman Newspaper, August 11, 2016 Thursday issue.

Cebuana junior cyclist Ana Patricia "Ica" Maximo, racing for TRIbu Lapu-Lapu, has been ranked 1st in the 90km bike split with a time of 2:56:22 hours in the all-female relay division in the recently concluded 2016 Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championships held in Lapu-Lapu City.

The former Batang Pinoy national champion was also the fastest among the female cyclists in the mixed relay category, making the Cebuana the top rider among the female cyclists in the relay divisions of the IM70.3 Asia-Pacific wide zone participated by more than 40 countries.

And she did this in her first attempt to complete the grueling Ironman 90K Individual Time Trial race. Her team, the TRIbu Lapu-Lapu, a grassroots sports project of Mayor Paz Radaza of the Lapu-Lapu City Govt., also made it to the Top 5 in the All-Female Relay.

The two-time SAC awardee, who turned 17 yesterday, attributes her performance to the choice of her cycling equipment.

"Some people asked me how I did it, what was the secret," said Icamax. "Training is important of course, but I think what made me a little faster was the cycling equipment I was using during the race, shares the Sacred Heart School - Hijas de Jesus grade 11 student.

To prepare for the Ironman event, she approached James & John Montecillo of YKKBikes to help her set-up her racing bike.

"A 90-km ITT bike course is very long for a solo rider to complete. It usually takes around 2-3 hours to finish it. To sustain the distance, you have to be comfortable riding your bike. The bike should fit you and not the other way around. When your back and neck starts to hurt and you cannot sit properly in the saddle, it will slow you down. Get a good bike fit from an expert to make you more efficient in your ride," said the three-time medalist of Phil National Games.

"We fitted Ica with a Ridley Liz road bike frame because its geometry is designed specifically for women riders. We have to consider that women have different torso length from men. It will not help forcing her to ride a time trial bike if it does not fit her. We also opted to use the SRAM groupset (shifting/braking) because she finds it easier to use," said James "BikeGuru" Montecillo.

"We kept on changing her saddle (seat) to find the most comfortable one for her to sit on, until we found the Fizik perfect for her. We installed the FSA handlebar, seat post and stem based on her bike fit data", said James.

The IM 90-km bike route is notorious for its winds, especially in the SRP area where it is near the sea. A rider will spend 30% more energy battling the winds. Since drafting or hiding in the back of another another rider is not allowed in IM, being aerodynamic is very crucial.

"My light climbing wheels was replaced with a heavier Token aero wheels fitted with Kenda tires. An AeroShell cover was installed in my Lazer helmet, the same used in the Tour de France. A Vision tribars were mounted to help me lower my body position.  The route was relatively flat but windy so "cheating" the wind using aerodynamic components was an advantage," shares Icamax

"I noticed during the Ford Bike Out training ride that the strong winds in SRP made my bike unstable and harder to control so a shift to a stable aero wheels on race day was timely. I now had better handling on the bike and made my ride faster," shares Ica

"During training, I used to finish a 90-km ITT ride in 3:20 hours. Using the proper equipment, I was able to reduce more than 20 minutes into my time. It really helps if you have the right people helping you out achieve your target. I am sharing this experience so that hopefully more girls will try out the sport. Its really fun and challenging," beams the medalist of USA Junior Cycling Series.

ULING CLASSIC ROAD RACE

The Uling Classic Road Race, organized by Ome Rodriguez of Cebu Cycling, is a two-stage road cyling event held in the Queen City of the South. Stage 1 is the 10-lap Criterium Race around the SRP Lantaw in Cebu City. Shown below is the Men 40 & Above Category race:

Right at flag-off, the cyclists, initiated by Art Lambo, attacked the field.

A 3-man breakaway was formed in the early part of the race.

The main peloton was composed and just let the break get away.

The youngest participant, 16-year old female cyclist Ica Maximo (right), powered by YKKBikes, drafts behind the duo of Dr. Jonathan Simbajon (left) and Ome Rodriguez (middle)

Philip Sainz of Ormoc City (left) attempts to chase the breakaway with Boy Pagnanawon (2nd left) reacting to the move.

Ica Maximo, with her trusted Token T38 tubular wheels, stood up to give a chase too.

Sainz (3rd left) and Pagnanawon (2nd left) successfully bridges the gap, putting pressure in the breakaway group.

Icamax, riding a Ridley Liz bike and without let up, continues to chase the peloton.

57-year old Boy Pagnanawon (right), the ex-pro former Marlboro Tour champion, pulls the breakaway to the finish line. Pagnanawon eventually won the race over Philip Sainz in a very close sprint finish.

ICA MAXIMO WINS BRONZE IN CALIFORNIA CIRCUIT RACE

Cebu Daily Newspaper
by Jonas Panerio
April 12, 2016

CEBUANA junior cyclist Ana Patricia “Ica” Maximo continued to improve by leaps and bounds as she bagged the bronze medal in the Fort Ord Circuit Race’s Women Category 4 on Sunday in Seaside, California.

In spite of the chilling temperatures which dropped as low as 10 degrees Celsius, the 16-year-old YKK Bikes-backed rider boarded her Ridley-Token-SRAM steed with confidence and powered through the 60-minute circuit race to bag the podium finish.

With no juniors division being offered in the competition, Maximo opted to join the tougher Women Cat 4 class. It paid off as the Filipina became the first junior cyclist from the Philippines to win in this Northern California race.

“I am very grateful to my American hosts Nat and Keith DeFiebre and Paris Loader for providing the accommodation and food in my races here in Northern California,” said the grade 10 student of Sacred Heart School–Hijas de Jesus.

The event was officially sanctioned by USA Cycling.

Up next for Maximo is the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California, which is considered to be the world’s largest cycling festival.

CEBUANO IS COUNTRY'S REP TO INT'L BIKE CAMP

Cebu Daily News.  CEBUANO cycling sensation Luis Miguel "Igi" Maximo is expected to hone his skills even more with the hopes of representing the country in future international competitions after he was selected to participate in the UCI World Cycling Center-Korea Satellite Training Camp next month in South Korea.

Maximo, a student of the Ateneo de Manila University who led the Cebu Multisport Team to gold in the recent Ironman 70.3 in Cebu, was endorsed to join the elite camp by PhilCycling, the country's governing body of the sport, under president Bambol Tolentino. He will be joined there by national track coach Carlo Jazul.

The 50-day training camp will give the participants the opportunity to undergo a high-level training and education camp to develop their knowledge and skills. The coaching education program will be delivered by Keith Flory and Dr. Chester Hills of World Cycling Center in UCI Switzerland.

"I am willing to go and learn new and advanced cycling programs. I am thankful to Cong. Bambol Tolentino and Dir. Jojo Villa for the opportunity. But I am also a student and I need to seek permission and support from my school especially that I will be absent for 50 days," said Maximo, a former awardee of the Sportswriters Association of Cebu (SAC) Sports Awards.

Maximo is no rookie when it comes to international exposure as he represented the country in the 2012 Asian Junior Cycling Championships in Malaysia and World Youth Day in Spain with the backing of his former school - PAREF Springdale School.

The biggest cycling distributor in the country, Cebu-based YKK Trading, will be supporting the youngster by providing him with race-ready Ridley frame, Campagnolo groupset, Token wheels, Lazer helmet and eyewear, Santini jerseys, FSA crankset, Vision basebar, Lake shoes, Kenda tires, Fizik saddle, CycleOps trainer, and Challenge tires which will be used in the training camp.
