UNIVERSITY of San Carlos-North Campus (USC-NC) and University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) will start their title bids as they face each other in today's opening match of the 2010 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Football Championship in the high school division at the USC Talamban Campus.

USC-NC and USJ-R will go up against each other at 1 p.m. while the 3 p.m. match will pit the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USP-F) and the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC).

A total of five teams will be competing in the high school division.

Defending champion Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) will be seeing action next weekend.

The 11-Aside tournament will use the league-type format during the eliminations, which means each school will be playing against each other once. The top four teams will advance to the semifinals with the first placer to go up against the fourth placer and the second placer to fight against the third placer.

The semifinal winners will advance to the finals while the losers will play for third.

Each team will have a lineup of 20. But during the tournament, the coach would only choose 18, with 11 as the official players and the remaining seven as substitutes. /CORRESPONDENT MARS G. ALISON

MAXIMO: CESAFI CONCERNED OF ATHLETE'S WELFARE

Published in Sun Star Cebu Newspaper on Aug. 27, 2010 Friday issue
by Edri Aznar, Staff Writer
Mike Limpag, Sports Editor

THE Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) isn’t just all about the games but is also concerned with welfare of the studies of each athlete.

Cesafi’s goal is “building champions off and on and the field,” which is why they had a thorough six-hour screening of the football players last Aug. 12.

Cesafi requires college students to pass 60 percent of their subjects. High school students must pass all.

Jonathan Maximo, as the tournament manager in Cesafi’s football tournament, shares the advocacy and said it’s the reason he has shown his support.

“Looking back made me realize that a sports event can somehow make or unmake a person, particularly the youth. Depending on the thrust of a sports organization it can make a youth to become an elite athlete, as in the case of the national sports associations (NSA), representing the country in international competitions, or, as in the case of Cesafi and other school leagues—guide the youth to balance academic and sports.

Cesafi clearly ‘uses’ sports to mold the youth of today become the leaders of tomorrow,” said Maximo in an e-mail to Sun.Star Cebu.

The Cesafi football tournament will kick off on Sept. 4 at the University of San Carlos-Technology Center.

The USC-North Campus will face the University of San Jose-Recoletos at 1 p.m., while the University of Southern Philippines Foundation face the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu in the high school division.

13 BARRED IN CESAFI FOOTBALL

DEFENDING champion University of San Jose-Recoletos will face last season’s powerhouse team, the University of the Visayas, in the opening of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) football tournament at the University of San Carlos-Technology Center football field.

On the other hand, the Cesafi Screening Committee has barred 13 football players for the Cesafi football tournament because of academic deficiencies.

Tournament manager Jonathan Maximo told Sun.Star Cebu that he has advised the 13 players from the different schools not to play in the tournament because he believes that the studies of the students are much more important than the games.

Education first

“Cesafi wants to put education first before the games. They were advised not to play for their own good. They have to take care of their studies first before playing football,” said Maximo. “That’s real essence of Cesafi football. It’s beyond the game,” he added.

Meanwhile, today will feature an intense match up of the two best teams of last season. UV finished the season first with three wins, no losses and a draw but was unfortunately disqualified from the tournament after having ineligible players in the squad.

Meanwhile USJ-R finished the elimination round with two victories, a defeat and a draw and defeated 2006 title holders USC, 2-0, in last season’s championships.

Following the most awaited match up will be a game between first runnerup USC against University of Cebu and a match between University of Southern Philippines-Foundation and the Cesafi football newcomer Cebu Doctors University.

Beforehand, there will be quick opening kickoff by Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy and tournament manager and former Cebu Football Association President Jonathan Maximo followed by the high school games of USPF vs. USJ-R at 8 a.m. and a match between Don Bosco Technology Center and USC. (EKA)

The Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) football event kicks off today at the University of San Carlos-Technological Center in Brgy. Talamban, this city.

Before the action could actually take place, 13 players were barred from joining the competition due to academic deficiency.

Tournament manager Jonathan “Maxi” Maximo said they are doing this because CESAFI is conscious of the athletes’ education and not solely on playing football.

Today, defending champion University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) will go up against the University of the Visayas. The other collegiate matchers pits the University of Cebu against University of San Carlos and league newcomer Cebu Doctors’ University opposite the University of Southern Philippines Foundation.

Before the tertiary action, there will be a pair of games in secondary division starting off with the showdown between USPF and USJ-R at 8 am. Afterwhich, Don Bosco will kick off its title retention bid against USC.

Last year, Don Bosco won the crown over USPF by just a goal difference.

The tournament follows a single round robin format, with the top four teams advancing into the crossover semifinals. The survivors will then clash for the championship. – Caecent No-ot Magsumbol

CESAFI FOOTBALL '07 OPENS THIS WEEKEND

by Norvie S. Misa, Correspondent

DEFENDING Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) football champion University of San Carlos will start its title defense when it hosts the University of the Visayas in the opening game at 1 p.m. this Saturday.

After the opening match, last year’s runnerup and four-time champion University of San Jose-Recoletos will face the University of Cebu at 3 p.m.

Cesafi football tournament manager Jonathan Maximo yesterday told Sun.Star Cebu that the next round of games will be on Nov. 18 after the formal opening of the Cesafi other events at the New Cebu Coliseum.

On Sunday, 2005 champion University of the Visayas will face UC at 1 p.m., while USC will take on the University of Southern Philippines.

Maximo said that this year’s participants must pass the eligibility rules of the Cesafi to qualify for the event.

Each player must have at least 14 academic units and must also pass 60 percent of all their subjects.

Maximo also said that the screening was done by the Cesafi screening committee composed of athletic directors of all member schools.

He added that the screening committee will also provide the final lists of players this Friday after some players said that they did not receive yet their final grades.

“We will give them time, an extension on Friday to prove they’re qualified based on the Cesafi eligibility rules”, he said.

After this weekend’s games, the Cesafi football will resume on Nov. 24, Dec. 1, 2, 8 and 9. (NSM)

CESAFI TAPS LOCAL EXPERTS FOR NINE EVENTS

courtesy of SUN STAR DAILY Newspaper (www.sunstar.com.ph)July 16, 2007 Monday issue
by Marian C. Baring, Staff Reporter

THE Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) has named the directors for nine of its 11 sports events.

Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy said they have tapped mostly heads of sanctioning organizations to oversee the operations of each event.

Before, events were supervised by people who were connected with the schools, leading to the hurling of a lot of allegations on biases.

“This way, all competitions will be fair. We are assured that we will not be accused of being biased. Also we could give more credence to these groups because they are the experts in these fields,” Tiukinhoy said.

Tapped as directors of the events are Lerma Binaoro of Central Visayas Badminton Umpires’ Association for badminton; Jonathan Maximo of Cebu Football Association for football; Victor Cunenco and Eleanor Hayco of Dancesport Team Cebu City for dancesport.

Cebu City Sports Commission’s John Pages, who is also the regional head of Philippine Tennis Association, was asked to take care of lawn tennis. Other experts in the field are Rene Brojan for taekwondo, Marvin Ruellan for Chess, Marcia Malbas for scrabble, Gil Ramas for swimming and Victor Yntig for track and field.

Two events

Cesafi, however, still has not decided on two events.

Cesafi will no longer be getting the services of the Cebu Volleyball Association for volleyball and are in the market for another well-meaning group, who will officiate another popular event. The other orphaned event is sepak takraw.

Screening

“We will finalize all of it on Tuesday during the screening of the athletes for basketball at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation gym,” Tiukinhoy said.

Also on Tuesday, Cesafi will be announce the schedules of these events and their possible venues and also on the status of the application of Asian College of Technology (ACT), who applied for Cesafi membership.

Cesafi is still keeping things about ACT under wraps and Tiukinhoy said he will be announcing the board’s decision by then.

The Cesafi opens on Aug. 4 at the Cebu Coliseum with the Palabas from each school, since the earlier plan to have an “Olympic-style” opening was trashed by the board. The schools will still have the same idea, but only smaller. The auxiliary events, on the other hand, will be on Aug. 26.

ABOITIZ CUP FOOTBALL RESUMES IN MANDAUE

Even with the 2006 Cebu City Olympics going on, there's no stopping the 10th Aboitiz-Cebu FA Football Cup as it scheduled to kick off today the competitions in two divisions at the San Roque Football field in Subangdaku, Mandaue.

The Boys 12-under, which started last month, will not have games today to give way to the staging of the boys 15-under class.

There will be a total of 12 teams joining and they are grouped into two groups. Last year, only eight teams competed.

Composing group A are PAREF-Springdale School, Blessed John XXIII Seminary , Don Bosco College-B, Colegio dela Inmaculada-Mandaue, San Roque Football Club and University of San Carlos-North Campus while group B has Abellana National School, Don Bosco College-A, Cebu International School, FC Inter Cebu, Centre for International Education and Sacred Heart School-Jesuit.

Tomorrow, it's going to be the men's premier league that will unfold.

Just like the boys 15 class, the number of entries in the men's open also soared from 14 last year to 24 this year.

"We didn't expect to have this much number of entries," says CebuFA president Jonathan Maximo.

With that, the organizers will have to re-format the tournament system to accommodate all teams.

Teams who will be playing in the Cebu City Olympics are being scheduled on a latter date to avoid conflict.

CAN'T HIDE AGE: CESAFI

Courtesy of Sun Star Newspaper (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/)
Friday, July 28, 2006 issue
by Marina C. Baring, Sun.Star Correspondent

Incidents of athletes lying about their age to get into the CESAFI and play will soon be a thing of the past, with match organizers now requiring those competing in auxiliary events to submit certified and original documents from the National Statistics Office.

This development came up in last Wednesday’s meeting of all coaches and tournament directors at Cebu Coliseum.

"It was agreed that this will work more to the advantage of the coaches because when there are cases of ineligibility, the coaches are still liable for it," said Jonathan Maximo, the tournament manager for football.

Ineligible athletes who manage to ease their way past screening is a common problem in multi-event sporting meets such as Cesafi.

"With NSO certification, we could be assured of the authenticity of the documents," Maximo added.

During the meeting, the modification of ground rules for every event was also discussed, including the penalty in cases of walkouts.

For this year, Cesafi implements stricter rules when it comes to teams storming out of the playing area. Before, when a team walks out, the schools or team owners are made to answer to it by paying a certain fee. This time, coaches will be penalized and be banned forever from the league.

Meanwhile, the other events of Cesafi will have its opening in the first week of September at the Cebu Coliseum.

Cesafi Commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy confirmed this and said that the opening ceremony will be held in the morning since there will be scheduled basketball games in the afternoon.

There will be different playdates for the events in athletics, badminton, football, beach volleyball, volleyball, table tennis, swimming, chess, scrabble, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, taekwondo and dancesports.

Each event also marks the date for the deadline of the submission of requirements. For football, Maximo said that all teams must produce the documents by August 14.

There will be five teams competing in the collegiate division and five from the high school class.
