LA: I WISH I WAS YOUNGER, FASTER

At the end of Lance Armstrong’s final mountain stage in a Tour de France career that stretches back to 1993, the seven-time champion described himself as being “a week away from a very private life” when he appeared on French TV alongside French president Nicolas Sarkozy. The pair have a good relationship that, Armstrong said, was based on a very simple fact: “We’re just two old guys who like to ride bikes.”

President Sarkozy, who followed the Tourmalet stage from race director Christian Prudhomme’s car, responded by saying of Armstrong: “The difference between him and me is that he could become president but I can’t become a champion.”... Read more

PAGES: IGI MAXIMO PEDALS TO THE MAX

Published in Sun Star Cebu Newspaper on July 22, 2010 Thursday issue
by John Pages, Sports Columnist

LANCE Armstrong is my idol,” said Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo.

“Apart from being a strong cyclist, what amazed me was how he fought cancer and won the Tour de France seven consecutive times!”

Igi Maximo is only 15. But when I asked for an assessment of who, between the top cyclists, he picks to win the TDF this Sunday, like a seasoned expert, he replied:

“I like Alberto Contador. He has proven to be an all-around cyclist and very strong climber. I enjoy it when he attacks big-time on the mountain stages. Andy Schleck is also a favorite—but my bet is Contador. After hearing Schleck’s mechanical problem, he may still have a chance but if he doesn’t pull this off on the mountain stages, he’ll have a hard time in the time trial because Contador is better.”

Mature. Well-versed. Sports fanatic. Those are words best to describe this third year high schooler at Paref-Springdale.

Igi has lived all his life in a sports-obsessed home. His dad, Maxi, was Cebu’s 2009 Sportsman of the Year and the former Cebu Football Association (CFA) president who is visible in everything-sports: running the 21K, managing the CESAFI football tournament, biking, updating his sports website, PaBolFC.blogspot.com.

Like father, like son.

Igi is the only son of Maxi and Sheila (they have two daughters, Ina and Ica). And, like the elder Maximo, the younger one has sports revved to the max: excelling in football as a varsity striker before transforming into the junior cycling champion that he is today.

“I started biking last year when I was invited by my classmates to join an outdoor group called Kaabay Boys Club of Sugbu Study Center,” said Igi. “Aside from biking, the club organizes camping, hiking, group studies and conducts talks on moral values and good character. I didn’t have a bike then, so I just borrowed. Later, I asked my dad to buy me one.”

In 12 or so months, Igi won three races in the prestigious Philippine Premier Cycling League (PPCL)—in Manila, Laguna and Clark. For someone so new to cycling, this is Lance-like.

Apart from the PPCL, which runs until December, Igi added, “I also plan to join the local races... but the one I want to join again is the US Junior Cycling events.

I had the opportunity to be in the US last summer and, while joining, not only had fun but learned a lot about road racing.

I was nervous and excited because I was the only entry from the Philippines. The junior cyclists were so good and fast. I want to go back and see if I can now keep up with them. I hope the Fil-Am community who partly sponsored me will invite me again next summer.”

Why this strenuous and dangerous sport?

“Cycling teaches me a lot,” he said. “One, how to balance my academics and sports.

Two, how to never give up... to bounce back from any loss, fighting stronger the next time. Three, in cycling or life, it’s not always an easy path; you will encounter challenges and it’s up to you how much you want to improve. Your performance will depend on your effort (I learned this from my dad.)”

Despite his youthfulness, Igi has started to compete in the Men’s Open (Elite) category, recently joining the mountain-bike ITT race and placing fourth.

When I asked Igi how he’s become a success given his young age, his reply was direct: I simply have the full support of my parents. Enough said!

To which his dad, Maxi, sent a separate email reply: “John, I asked Igi why he answered it that way. He said he just wants to highlight one important aspect—the parents’ support for a young athlete.

“I find him to be humble kid. He is not the type that trumpets his victories. Even in school, he does not tell his classmates and teachers that he won. He just keeps it to himself. They only find it out when they read it in the papers. This is partly why his fellow students and teachers are at ease with him: undefeated in the Student Council elections (Grade 7-class rep, first year-treasurer, second year-secretary, third year- vice president) and six-time Springdale Athlete of the Year.”

ESPINOSA WINS CLASS B OF DANAO ROAD RACE

CEBU, Philippines - Ramon Espinosa got the surprise of everyone after he ruled category B of the Danao-Ilihan Road Race in Danao City.

Espinosa defeated one of Cebu’s top triathletes Elmo Clarabal, while another veteran cyclist Tyre Lambo ended third.

Noy Jopson, the fastest Pinoy entry in last year’s Ironman Philippines, settled for fourth, while Orlan Toring came in fifth.

Completing the top 10 finishers were Art Lambo, event organizer Ome Rodriguez, Ralph Sios-e, John Gayatin, and Ronald Alconera.

Ronnie Adlawan, on the other hand, bested 26 other entries to lord it over in class C.
Diding Jaluag trailed Adlawan, while Raffy Bacayo, Tats Codina and Tata Ty occupied the third to fifth spots.

The fast-rising cyclist Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo finished the race covering 70 kilometers but missed the top spot as he was seemingly tired from the Individual Time Trial in mountainbike he competed a day before the road race.

In class D, Jaime Noynay clinched the top honors followed by Nelson Jaca, Crispin Solon, Pepe Rosales and Delfin Omisol.

The equally-exciting mountainbike action saw Asay Navarro dominating the race followed by Bryan Lozano. – THE FREEMAN

“IT’S hard to say no to Cesafi.”

Former Cebu Football Association president Jonathan Maximo decided to help the football competition of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi), set to open its 10th season later this month.

“I will help in any way I can. Although one need not be a tournament manager to help out the league. The bottom line is I can’t really say no to Cesafi. I, myself, am a beneficiary of the Cesafi system. I was also a varsity player and because of that I got free education and this is my way of giving back,” said Maximo.

“Let’s pay forward the good things that we got for being student-athletes,” said Maximo, a businessman who is also busy being the one-man support crew of his son Igi’s budding cycling career.

Maximo added he hopes the other former varsity players will also come out to help the league.

“I think it’s important to promote the message of volunteerism.

So next time, we don’t have to force people to become tournament managers, we will have a lot to choose from,” said Maximo.

“We will need the help of other former varsities to make sure Cesafi will have a good staging this year,” said Maximo.

“Everyone should do their share to assure that the Cesafi tradition of helping student-athletes continues,” said Maximo.

The others tournament managers are Victor Yntig of the Department of Education (DepEd) for athletics; Lerma Binaoro of the Philippine Sports Commission for badminton; Cebu Chess Club’s Marvin Ruelan for chess; University of Cebu’s Victor Cuenco for dancesport; Fritz Tabura of the University of the Visayas (UV) for tennis; Manuel Aloba for karatedo; Tony del Prado of the Cebu Taekwondo Association for taekwondo; Marsha Malbas of UV for scrabble; Marlon Gicain of DepEd for sepak takraw; Dr. Gil Ramas for swimming and Carmen Prado of DepEd for table tennis.

The Cebu Volleyball Association (Ceva) was tapped to manage volleyball and beach volleyball but the decision hinges on today’s meeting between the Ceva and Cesafi officials, where Ceva will be handing its proposed rates to the league.
