VILLAFLOR: ISKUL BUKOL AND FUTBOL

THE sound of maternal fury raged on the other end of the line.

“When you get home, you burn this violin. Your daughter has no need for it,” the voice said, obliquely addressing the nine-year-old now sulking—as I imagined —on the car seat.

“Huh?” said I, the way a terrorized man faced with an absurd situation would. I swear I could hear The Flight of the Bumblebee playing in the background.

“Do you know your daughter skipped violin lessons to play football?”

I could not recall what my reply was or whether I replied at all because the mother hung up. But there was, I remember, the faint trace of a smile, which I quickly retracted upon reminding myself that this was not the best paternal reaction to a two-headed disaster.

The first disaster, of course, was the skipping of classes. The other was my lack of pedagogic instinct to chastise the minor offender there and then, made worse by an inappropriate smile.

For a moment, it troubled me why I found the daughter’s actions amusing, and hardly objectionable.

Then it hit me: the daughter inherited this skipping thing from her dad, putting the latter’s moral high ground in question.

Several years ago, I would sneak out of the office to play an hour or so of football with the FC Ramos boys before I’d return, often with a limp, just as work began piling on my desk.

It occurred to me that the football pitch my daughter had chosen over the music classroom last Monday was the same ground I frequented as a sneaky employee.

Wave upon wave of nostalgia lapped at memory’s feet, and I remembered some more: this was the same field where the daughter learned her first football lessons five summers ago.

It was inevitable then that this name should crop up: Maxi Maximo, the man who had spearheaded a football revival in Cebu at that time.

It was Coach Maxi, along with Coach Joel Deen, who taught my daughter the rudiments of football, along with it an insuperable love for the game during a summer clinic in 2005 in that same football pitch, which has since been turned mainly into a school playground.

Maximo, following a short break from the sport, is back in the thick of things football, this time to help Cesafi with its tournament.

The events of last Monday, I came to realize, were a reminder of how not to raise a student-athlete.

In the Cesafi’s 10th season, Maximo wants to make sure of one thing: “student first, athlete second.”

“Looking back made me realize that a sports event can somehow make or unmake a person, particularly the youth,” Maxi wrote in an e-mail.

This is why, along with the Cesafi screening committee, he wants to see to it that before the students can join the tournament, which is now on its second weekend, “they have done their homework well—passing at least 60 percent of their subjects for college students or all the subjects in the case of high school pupils.”

Too often, gifted athletes get hooked on football to the point of negligence. We see too many of them loitering all their lives in some barren field. They could have used better advice.

That Monday night, the daughter and I watched the new Karate Kid, which has a lesson or two to impart. But it wasn’t Jacky Chan’s Mr. Han that did the only teaching, the late Pat Morita’s Mr. Miyage of the original movie did his fare share of pedagogy as well.

“Lesson not just karate only,” says Mr. Miyage to his student Daniel. “Lesson for whole life. Whole life have a balance. Everything be better. Understand?”

Understood.

And no more skipping for me.

The Sacred Heart School-Hijas De Jesus Senior Girls Team bagged the Girls-17 title in the 1st Patid sa TC Football Festival recently at the University of San Carlos- Technological Center field in Brgy. Talamban, this city.

The SHS-HJ belles did not concede a single goal in sweeping all their three games in the elimination round. They beat SHS-Jesuit, 1-0, and then pummeled Little Angels Montessori School (LAMS) 12-0, courtesy of the three goals each from Bea Maximo and Jackie Ting, two goals from Erika Casas and one goal each from Banban Yu, Mara Dado, Maris Ting and Lea-Ann Calejesan.

The SHS-HJ Seniors sustained their sizzling run by whipping sister-team SHS-HJ, 2-0. Banban Yu and Maris Ting delivered the winning goals.

SHS-HJ, behind the heroics of Banban Yu and Erika Casa, then thumped San Roque FC, 2-0, in the final to clinch the championship.

For topping Group A with a clean 3-0 slate, SHS-HJ Seniors also advanced into the women’s open, but lost to the Bulwarks via penalty shootout, 2-0. Bulwarks is composed of former varsity players who are now employed with different companies.

The SHS-Hijas Seniors are composed of Gail Oliamot, Bea Maximo, Erika Casas, Banban Yu, Jackie Ting, Lea-Ann Calejesan, Nicole Chanlim, Regine Lim, Mara Dado, Maris Ting, Karina Hilado and Monica Lee. Their coach is Dom Villamor assisted by Richard Canedo and Chris Escudero.

Interestingly, the SHS-HJ Seniors had already established several records including back-to-back titles in the San Roque Football Festival (2006 and 2007), championship in this year’s Milo Little Olympics Visayas, and first runner-up honors in the 2006 Mizuno Football Festival.

The Sacred Heart School-Hijas de Jesus Coaching Staff turned negative outlook into positive to clinch the men’s open crown of the 1st Lahug Football Festival at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) field.

The newly-formed SHS-HJ Coaching Staff frustrated Don Bosco Alumni Football Club, 2-1, via penalty shootout in the final.

The victory of the SHS-HJ Coaching Staff booters was unexpected as they almost withdrew from the tournament after losing their first game against Barili by default. They only had six players who came on time.

“The team’s performance was totally unexpected. We almost withdraw from the tournament. I was disgusted when they forfeited their first game when the team was not able to field the minimum required 7 players to start the game. The others came in very late. Very unprofessional,” said team director Jonathan “Maxi” Maximo.

Maximo lectured the coaches that they are supposed to be role models to their players, yet they too lacked discipline.

After the discussion, everybody committed, not exactly to win the title, but at least to book a semifinal seat.

SHS-HJ was right on target as it landed No.2 in Bracket A with a 3-2 win-loss record.

SHS-HJ won against USPF-B, 2-0, Talisay Football Club, 3-0, and NTD FC-A, 1-0. Its second loss was inflicted by Don Bosco Alumni, 0-1.

In the semifinal round, SHS-HJ upset Bracket B top seed Hiroshi Football Club, 1-0. Former RP team member Richard Cañedo nailed the winning goal for the Jesuits.

Having been beaten by Don Bosco in the elimination, SHS-HJ Coaches worked doubly hard on their defense resulting into a scoreless draw at the end of the regulation period, thus, the penalty shootout.

Don Bosco’s first kicker scored, but Jade Paghubasan of SHS-HJ quickly sank the equalizer. The Bosconians flubbed in their next two attempts and in the ensuing sequence, Cañedo hit a goal to seal SHS-HJ’s resounding triumph. — Caecent No-ot Magsumbol
