SO YOU WANT TO JOIN THE RUNNING MANIA

PHIL DAILY INQUIRER. Walk. Friends who jumped into the sport with no exercise background have sworn off running after waking up with sore and stiff legs after a first attempt. Get your legs and heart used to the activity by walking in a leisurely place for 30 minutes to an hour. When that gets easy, alternate walking with an easy jog (try the one minute walk/one minute jog ratio). And when that gets easy, lengthen your running time over your walking time until you find yourself running all the way...

DUATHLON, MARATHON UPDATES

by John Pages
Columnist - Match Point

“The Duathlon started at 4 p.m. and used similar bike/run routes as the triathlon. Several participants from the triathlon joined. They still had enough fuel in their tank to finish the race and the top three duathlon finishers proved that right.

Coming in as champion was Noel Salvador at 1:06:00, followed by Elmo Claraval and Nonoy Jopson.”

DR. PETER MANCAO reports on last Sunday’s Big Sur Marathon in California, USA: “Another triumph for team Cebu! Yong (Larrazabal) with a time of 4 hours, 27 minutes. James (Abilla) 5h 1min. Margaret (Abilla) 5h 15min. Peter (Mancao) 5h 24min.”

MARATHON FEAR NOW GONE FOR GOUCHER

UNIVERSAL SPORTS. “Kara realizes that she made a tactical mistake and wasn’t supposed to lead any earlier than a mile to go,” he said. “We felt she could out kick anybody if she played her cards right. It boiled down to 10K racing. When a 10K runner takes a lead from the beginning on the track, 95 percent of the time they don’t win. And the wind started to pick up and she started to do all the work. If she had waited and made it into an 800-meter race like the other girls did, she would have finished better. It’s a matter of gaining experience with every race.”...

CEBU, Philippines – As I mentioned in a previous column, May is a merry running month where practically all Sundays are booked with a running event. R2dM: ETHIOPIAN CRUSHES MEN'S BOSTON MARATHON

RUNNERS WORLD. Merga, who is far from the most graceful runner to start with, was visibly straining as he pushed on the hills. He looked back frequently, and later noted that he was surprised that Cheruiyot was very quickly nowhere to be seen. Cresting Heartbreak Hill in the 21st mile, he looked back again, and then again at Cleveland Circle in the 23rd mile. Through a translator, Merga later related, “After 40K, I looked behind and saw nobody was there. Then I knew I would win.”...

R2dM: KENYAN WINS WOMEN'S BOSTON MARATHON

RUNNERS WORLD. In the slowest Boston Marathon since 1985, Kenyan Salina Kosgei defeated Dire Tune on the strength of an incredible sprint finish that produced the narrowest winning margin in the event's 113-year history...

Goucher was visibly upset upon finishing and teared up several times as she spoke to reporters. "My initial plan was to wait to the very end and kick," she said, "but I looked around with 5 miles to go and just felt that there were too many people there. I felt great, so I just started to press. The whole time I felt like I had another gear. I don't know. They just had more."...

TO WIN BOSTON, MERGA MUST DEFEAT HIMSELF

RUNNING TIMES. “I woke up before 6:00 a.m. for training and could not ask someone in the house to make me breakfast because it was too early and I could not wake them up,” he recalls. “I would go to training on an empty stomach, then train hard, and go to school for the whole day without eating. I would then go to the farm to tend to the cattle and might not eat until later in the evening. I tried to go to school, but I could not. It became a choice between training and school and I chose training.”

“That is the main reason why I decide to switch to road running and the marathon,” he says. “I had a very difficult childhood, and I knew that the only way I could become a good runner was to first earn enough money to feed myself properly.”...
