CEBUANO Jonathan Simbajon dominated the Kia IronLegs Cycling last weekend in Bohol.

Simbajon actually just finished third in the final leg of the three-part cycling series but his top finishes in the first two legs were enough to get him the overall title of Category C.

Stage 3 was a 53-kilometer road race, where riders had to navigate a mostly flat race route.

Despite winning the first two legs, Simbajon left nothing to chance as he fought the other riders tooth and nail. He and fellow Cebuanos Luis Miguel Maximo and Michael Mancio challenged two others in a photo-finish.

All five sprinted to the finish line together and race officials had to resort to their camera's slow-motion feature to determine the sequence of the finishes as only fractions of a second divided the top five.

Manila's Emmanuel Tiples was declared the stage winner, while Bohol's Glicerio Torreon came in second.

Sixteen-year-old Maximo, the youngest in the field, finished fourth, while Mancio was fifth. Maximo actually only targeted a top 15 finish owing to the fact that he is a teenager in a division for grown men and hasn't trained because of school priorities.

In the over-all classification for Category C, however, Simbajon came up on top, followed by Tiples and Torreon. Maximo, the only teenager in this division, was fourth overall.

Simbajon won Stage 1, an individual time trial, and Stage 2, a mountainous 55K road race.

Meanwhile, Roberto Saniel of Bohol topped stage 3 in Category B. Cebuanos Rommel Limpangog, Michael Flores, Tyre Lambo and Tony Codina completed the top five list.

CEBU, Philippines - Jonathan Simbajon led the Cebuanos successful quest after reigning supreme in the just-conclude Kia Ironlegs Cycling action in Bohol.

Simbajon went home with the yellow jersey of class C despite a strong finish made by Manila's Emmanuel Tiples in the third and final stage.

Simbajon had enough cushion to lean on after winning the first two stages that despite finishing only third in the last stage, he brought home the title.

Tiples wound up second while Bohol's Glecerio Torreon landed third overall.

The youngest rider, 16 year-old fast-rising Luis Miguel "Igimax" Maximo of Paref-Springdale also left a good mark after finishing fourth overall.

The Ridley frame, Token wheels, Lazer helmets, FSA stem, Kenda tires, Shimano cogs sponsored by YKK paved the way for the young Maximo's impressive debut in the unfamiliar route.

He ranked sixth in the opening stage, third in stage 2, and fourth in stage 3.

The FREEMAN sports columnist, Dr. Jose Vicente Araneta took fifth place in the overall standings.
Cebuano pedal-pushers also made waves in class B occupying the second to fourth spot.
Rommel Limpangog came out second overall behind Bohol's Roberto Saniel.
The third to fifth places were occupied by Michael Flores, Tyre Lambo and Francis Lim. (FREEMAN)

CEBUANO cyclist Jonathan Simbajon dominated the two stages in Day 1 of the Kia IronLegs cycling in Bohol last Saturday.

In the first stage of the race, which was an individial time trial (ITT) Jonathan Simbajon, JV Araneta and Paul John So --all doctors—took the top three spots in the Category C race. They are all members of the Cebu Executive Cycling.

Cebuano teenage cyclist Luis Miguel Maximo came in at fifth. Manila's Emmanuel Tiples came in at fourth, while Australian Brett Harrington finished fifth.

The ITT, which is a race against the clock around a 12K circuit, served as the warm-up for a more gruelling race later in the day.

In the afternoon, the racers tackled a scenic 55K road race.

It started in Tagbilaran City and passed by the famous sites of Baclayon Church, Loboc River, man-made forest and the Chocolate Hills.

In this round, it was still Simbajon who ruled the Category C, outclassing local rider Glecerio Torreon of Bohol.

Coming in at third was Maximo, who was racing in the men's category because there was no juniors event. He was the youngest participant at 16.

After his fifth place finish in the morning race, he made up for it with a stronger performance in the afternoon.

In Category B, Bohol’s Robert Saniel overpowered Cebuanos Romel Limpangog, Tyre Lambo, Michael Flores and Antonio Codina, who took the second to fifth places.

CEBU'S TOP JUNIOR CYCLIST TO STRUT WARES IN BOHOL

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu's top junior cyclist Luis Miguel "Igi" Maximo of YKK Bikes departs for Bohol today to join the 4th Kia IronLegs Cycling Race this weekend in Bohol.

The 16-year-old senior high school student of PAREF-Springdale will take the challenge of the two-day, three-stage 123km road race around the province of Bohol.

Recently, Maximo has been elected president of the school's student council. The demands of being a graduating high school student has somehow affected his training lately.

He also just came from a three-day school retreat (July 20-22) and training this week was not possible. Nevertheless, the sport of cycling is very much a part of his student life.

He does not expect much from the competition since there is no junior category and he will be up against the men/adult competitors. This is his first time to race in Bohol and with the recent academic demands, a top 15 finish will be a good result.

His previous races were overall champion in the juniors category during the Grandea de Mayo in Alcantara/Badian, Cebu and overall titlist in Cebu Cycling TeamSix road Race in Uling Naga , Cebu last month.

He used to race in Manila and Luzon and having it in neighboring Bohol will be a good experience. The Cebu Cycling delegation will be headed by Dr. JV Araneta, a columnist of The FREEMAN.
