BEMEDALLED junior cyclist Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo will be vying for a slot in the RP national junior team training pool as he competes in the Philippine Cycling Road Race Championships today in Tagaytay City.
Maximo, who has made a name for himself in the junior cycling scene by winning three crowns in the Philippine Premier Cycling League, will be up against some tough competition as he competes in the junior elite category, which is a division for participants who will turn 17 or 18 years old next year.
The top four finishers will be included in the training pool that will represent the country in international competitions. Maximo aims to utilize the race to gain more experience and exposure as well as to learn more about the higher level of competition.
The road race will be tough as the 80-kilometer route will take the racers through Tagaytay to Batulao, Tuy, Balayan, Lian, Nasugbu, Batulao, Batangas, then back to Tagaytay for the finish. The route is expected to be very tough with numerous steep hills to contend.
Maximo will also compete in the individual time trial (ITT) event tomorrow, which encompasses 40 km, the longest distance he will race in for the ITT event. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio

CEBUANO cycling prodigy Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo plunges back into action today as he sets out to win the individual time trial (ITT) event of the prestigious Philippine Premier Cycling League at the Daan Hari, Muntinlupa City, Manila.
The race, otherwise known as the “Race For Truth” will pit Maximo, himself a three-time winner in the PPCL, against the clock. Cyclists start in one minute intervals with the one owning the fastest time getting the win.
The Junior category ITT race is a 12km route in the undulating Daang Hari road that connects Muntinlupa City to Cavite. The venue was also used during the Tour ng Pilipanas. Maximo will be up against cyclists and triathletes from Manila and the Luzon.
Admittedly, Maximo is still trying to improve on his time in the ITT race and he will try his best to better his efforts in this event. “Among the cycling disciplines, it is in ITT that I need to improve. I did good in road racing and criterium in my past races, which I got more experience here in Cebu, but it is in ITT that I have to work out more. ITT is a triathlete's forte and with their time trial rigs...
