BEMEDALLED junior cyclist
Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo will be vying for a slot in the RP national junior team training pool as he competes in the Philippine Cycling Road Race Championships today in Tagaytay City.
Maximo, who has made a name for himself in the junior cycling scene by winning three crowns in the Philippine Premier Cycling League, will be up against some tough competition as he competes in the junior elite category, which is a division for participants who will turn 17 or 18 years old next year.
The top four finishers will be included in the training pool that will represent the country in international competitions. Maximo aims to utilize the race to gain more experience and exposure as well as to learn more about the higher level of competition.
The road race will be tough as the 80-kilometer route will take the racers through Tagaytay to Batulao, Tuy, Balayan, Lian, Nasugbu, Batulao, Batangas, then back to Tagaytay for the finish. The route is expected to be very tough with numerous steep hills to contend.
Maximo will also compete in the individual time trial (ITT) event tomorrow, which encompasses 40 km, the longest distance he will race in for the ITT event. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
