CYCLING: BEST CROSS-TRAINING FOR RUNNERS

NY Times.  Cycling is the best cross-training sport for runners, Mr. Cook believes, since it builds an aerobic base while maintaining range of motion. “It forces your leg muscles to contract and increases the blood flow,” he said. “If you do it properly, you’re not really straining on the bike, the muscles aren’t getting that abused.”...

The average runner’s cadence is 180 steps per minute. “If you get on the bike and you’re riding at 90 r.p.m.’s,” you replicate that cadence, Mr. Pierce said... Read more

CHIONGBIANS MAKE WAVES IN DANAO

Published in Cebu Daily Newspaper on June 25, 2012 Monday issue
by Mars G. Alison, Correspondent
Rick Gabuya, Sports Editor

THE CHIONGBIAN siblings are making their presence felt in the triathlon scene as they finished in the top 3 of their respective categories in yesterday's 2nd leg of the Congressman Red Tri Series held in Danao City, Cebu

Having the most notable finish among the Chiongbians yesterday was 14-year old Justin, who finished third overall in the sprint distance with a time of 53 minutes and 10 seconds.

Justin of the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu opted to compete in the sprint distance rather than the half sprint for the SuperTriKids (STK) contest.  He also clinched the 16 & below title.  With this progress, Justin will be one of the competitors to look out for in the upcoming IronKids slated Aug. 4.

Justin's younger brother, Yuan, finished second in the 11-12 years old category of the STK, while his younger sister, six-year-old Savannah, ruled the under 7 years old category.

OVERALL WINNER

Franz Baguio relegated the rest of the field behind him as he finished first overall with a time of 51:23.  He also claimed the title in the 25-29 year old category.

Second overall went to former Philippine team member Chris Aldeguer, who clocked 52:15 to also top the 35-39 years old category.

Other top finishers were Vicente Cabahug in the 20-24 years old category, Ritchie Mataragnon in the 30-34 years old; and Mark Angelo Laus in the 40-44 years old.

In the STK category, Xeemon Sage Cuyos dominated the 7-8 years old, Ralph Eduard So topped the 11-12 years old male, Aaliyah Ricci Mataragnon reigned supreme in the 11-12 years old female, John Trian Tan came in first in the 13-15 years old male while Ana Patricia Maximo once again claimed the 13-15 years old female title.  The sprint relay was topped by the team of Bernie Gomez and John Benedict Sy./CORRESPONDENT MARS G. Mike T. Limpag & Marian C. Baring, Sports Editors

MORE than 20 participants for the Supertrikids will be strutting their wares in today's 2nd leg of the Congressman Red Triathlon Series at the Sand Beach Resort in Danao City.

According to Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) executive director Oscar "Boying" Rodriguez, the race will serve as a springboard for future junior national team members.

Among the athletes taking part in today's race are the Chiongbian brothers Justin and Yuan, former Supertrikids champion 11-year-old Nina Francesca Villaba, and youngest participant 5-year old Marc Anton Queblatin and triathlon winner Ana Patricia Maximo.

Former national member Chris Aldeguer will be joining the sprint event.  Congressman Red Durano and Vice Mayor Nito Durano will be joining the duathlon event.

"After Danao, the action will shift to Alegre Beach Resort next weekend for the last leg of the Congressman Red Tri Series," said Rodriguez.

Rodriguez added that they will host the Sogod Mayor Moonyeen Tri Cup on July 14.

It will be the last major triathlon competition before the triathlon season close with the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 on Aug. 5 at the Shangri-la Resort and Spa. ISL

CONG. RED TRIATHLON GETS UNDERWAY TODAY

Rick Gabuya, Sports Editor

THE 2ND LEG of the Congressman Red Tri Series will kick off today in Danao City with a SuperTriKids (STK) competition to be held alongside it as a sidelight event.

The second leg of the series was supposed to be held in Camotes Island early this month but it was cancelled due to bad weather.

This Danao City leg woudl have been the third and final leg but instead it will serve as the second leg with the third leg slated July 1 at the Alegre Beach Resort in Sogod town, northern Cebu.

The Danao leg will feature a sprint distance, a mini-sprint for the STK and a duathlon.

The sprint distance will cover a 750 meter swim, 20 kilometer bike and a 5 kilometer run.  The mini sprint will cover half of the distance of each discipline while the duathlon will start with a 2.5km run, 20-km bike and end with another 2.5-km run.

Notable athlete seeing action is former Philippine team member Chris Aldeguer.

Representative Red Durano (Cebu 5th district) and his father Danao Vice Mayor Ramon "Nito" Durano will also be seeing action in the duathlon event.

The STK, on the other hand, will have about 20 hopefuls joining.

Organizer Oscar "Boying" Rodriguez said the STK will serve as the springboard for future Cebuano junior national team members.

Once again showing their potentials will be the Chiongbian brothers Justin and Yuan, STK champion 11-year old Nina Villaba, Ana Patricia Maximo and youngest participant Marco Anton Queblatin, who is just five years old.  After the third leg in Sogod, the town will also host the Sogod Mayor Moonyeen Tri-Cup on July 14./CORRESPONDENT MARS G. LIMPAG: HOW A FOOTBALL CALENDAR CAN HELP ABOITIZ CUP

Published in Sun Star Newspaper on June 18, 2012 Monday issue
by Mike Limpag, Sports Editor & Columnist, Fair Play

THERE was a time in Cebu football, when the Aboitiz Cup was the only thing that mattered and all the rest played second fiddle.

That is no longer true as it has become one of the casualties of the clash of schedules of organizers in Cebu football and teams, forced to choose between a festival and the Aboitiz Cup, prefer to join the two-day tourneys instead of Cebu’s longest running football tournament.

Worse, some teams compromise the quality of their games by joining two events in a day, which led to Paref-Springdale getting banned by the old CFA board for three years. (That of course, is another story).

One of the plans of the new board--the one whose recognition is being put on hold by a mysterious complainant in the PFF—is to bring back the prestige of the tournament and there’s a simple way of doing that.

A football calendar where the Aboitiz Cup is the centerpiece event and the rest of the footie festivals are scheduled around it.

The rest of the regular annual football tournaments—the Cebu City Olympics, the Milo Olympics, the Cesafi, Sinulog and Thirsty Cups—have regular schedules that can be easily inputted in such calendar. And if there’s a clash, it’s a matter of adjusting the dates.

There should be no pissing contests where one organizer dares a team, “just choose which one you will join” because that’s what got us here in the first place.

There’s another plan, this one coming from the Aboitizes themselves, that I hope will be revived by the new board.

Back in 2010 and in 2009, before the start of the tournament, the organizers met sports editors for help on marketing their tournament. They also wanted their website promoted--they wanted players to tweet, post news in their Facebook accounts, link fotos and the whole nine yards.

Social media, of course, was what helped make the Azkals big and organizers of the Aboitiz Cup were smart enough to recognize such power before the Azkals became mainstream.

In 2010, I told them that the website would have been a huge help in 2009 if only there were regular updates. But they said they already addressed such problem, spending hundreds of thousands of pesos for a system--including hardware--that would allow field officials to just input the data after a game and voila, you have updates.

Sadly, that too, didn’t happen and that’s something that I hope would change this year. The website, sans data, is a waste of cyberspace.

So, how does one get the data and how many men do you need to get such data for a huge event like the Aboitiz Cup that lasts for months?

I know the perfect guy to ask and unless he’s busy supporting his son’s budding cycling career, I hope former president Jonathan Maximo can give the new board tips in gathering data. He did it then, that means it can be done again.

CONTEST. There’s also another idea I threw at Maxi a few years back and it could help spur interest for Cebu football in the social media—get the school papers involved. By the time the Aboitiz Cup gets rolling, the school papers will be busy with their first edition and getting them to write about their school matches would be easy since it’s part of their job.

Students these days, they post everything they do—and don’t do—online, so a few posts about their school’s Aboitiz Cup campaign could lead to a few copycats and so on.

There could even be a contest for the student writers and photojournalists and what’s the one prize that could spur them to do their best—an all-expense trip, and a media pass, for the next Azkals home game?
