PLDT RIDERS RULE DAY 1 OF TNF

January 24, 2010 Sunday issue
by Caecent No-ot Magsumbol, Staff Writer
Manny Villaruel, Sports Editor

The Freeman Newspaper.  CEBU, Philippines - Two riders from Team PLDT topped their respective classes in the first day of action in the 8th RECYCLE-Luzvimin-USA Cebu Race Series also known as 'Tour Ni Frank' yesterday at the Mandaue City reclamation area.

Bitoy Daa of PLDT-Bohol dominated the criterium under class B while teammate Dondi Azarcon ruled in category C.

Daa crossed the finished line in one hour, 12 minures and 48.088 seconds to take the yellow jersey going into today's road race from Toledo and most of Transcentral highway all the way to Buak.

HSBC's Bernie Mateo took the second place honors followed by Cebu's Frank Alindao.

HBC’s main man Ernie Hortaleza, who brought the hi-tech timing device known as the transponder to Cebu, wound up fourth with the time of 1:13:43.088, while Jef Flores of Dipolog placed fifth in 1:13:43.134.

Rounding up the top 10 finishers were Noy Jopson (1:13:43.173), Rommel Lindayog (1:13:43), Wilson Rosetes (1:13:44), Dipolog's Pinpin Uy (1:13:44:349) and Cebu s Ome Rodriguez (1:13:44.426).

In class C, Azarcon clocked in 1:02:34 for the top post, edging out Leyte's Allan Pastor by just one-tenth of a second. Antonio Codena got the third place.

Completing the top 10 cast were Lito Pastedio, Tyre Lambo, Louie Gutierrez, Tata Ty, Xyle Regis,Alex Barras and Bogart Dela Rosa.

Igi Maximo, on the other hand, got the suprise of everyone after the 14-year-old neophyte dared to race against the veterans and racers far older than him.

Igi, son of noted sportsman Jonathan Maximo, had to sign a waiver that the organizers will not be liable for any injury that he may suffer for joining the race.

Igi Maximo showed it was worth a try as he landed 21st in a field of 50 under class C.—Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (FREEMAN NEWS)

TOUR NI FRANK GOES HI-TECH

'Tour Ni Frank' goes hi-tech The Freeman >> The Freeman Sections >> Cebu Sports: "CEBU, Philippines - For the first time in the annals of Cebu cycling, an event goes hi-tech by using a transponder to time the performance of the racers when the Recycle-Luzvimin-USA Cebu Cycling Series-Tour Ni Frank unfolds today at the Mandaue City reclamation area.

Over a hundred pedal-pushers from all over the country are expected to see action in the two-day contest conceptualized by a Cebuano balikbayan Frank Gatdula eight years ago with the support of RECYCLE, one of the most respected cycling groups here."...

ON GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION IN SPORTS

Elizalde tells PSC: Go easy on RP pool The Philippine Star >> News >> Sports: "Presidential candidate Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro recently sat down with members of the sports media, and when asked about the problem of government intervention in sports, he responded in a very simple manner.

“It’s a simple question (to NSAs): Do you want government help or not? If you want government help then that’s government intervention. There’s that string attached. You can’t have your cake and eat it, too,” said Teodoro."...

NAVARRO: RUNNING SUCCESS

Running Success!!! - BLEACHER TALK By Rico Navarro The Freeman >> The Freeman Sections >> Cebu Sports: "To us, the main factor why the event was a huge success was the attention that the organizers gave to the “little things.” And when I talk about the little things, I’m not even referring to the technical aspect about the marathon per se, but the little things that count a lot, but get the least attention by most organizers...

BEA MAXIMO: I WANTED TO SHOW THEM I CAN DO IT

RUSH. The author on her way to finishing
at No. 16 among 73 runners.

By Bea Maximo

“Before we experience victory every part of us wants to quit.”

This short statement summarizes my Cebu City Half-Marathon 2010 experience.

As I ran my first half marathon I had mixed emotions. I felt cold, nauseated, irritated and uneasy.

As soon as we arrived in I.T Park the wind sent chills down my spine as I heard the announcer call the attention of the 21k runners to start assembling.

I tried warming up but it felt useless for my feet were slowly feeling numb as I anxiously waited for the clock to read 5:10.

It read 4:30... 4:45... and I started to sweat as I stood beside elite athletes feeling the rush and the anxiety.

At 5 a.m., I desperately wanted to start running and thought “ I wanna get this over with”.

At 5:10 a.m., my heart started leaping as I heard the gun shot.

Thump...thump...thump...lub-dub...lub-dub.

The sound of my feet and my heart beat formed a rhythm.

I listened to my body and picked up my pace for the first few kilometers. I smiled at the crowd who were shouting words of encouragement boosting my energy and the dancers who filled the quiet streets with music and color.

Endless road.

This went on for miles and miles of what felt like an endless road to nowhere.

Soon my feet were giving up, I started having stomach cramps; at some point I wanted to stop, thinking “Why am I making myself suffer? No one asked me to do this. I made the decision”

But as I continued to push myself and finally arrived at the finish line I heard my mom and my sister, Ica, cheer my name and then I remembered why I entered the race.

I wanted to make my family proud. I wanted to show them I can do it. A different kind of rush filled my body as I crossed the finish line.

A feeling that no one can take away from me, the feeling of victory.

AILEEN TOLENTINO: BIG HEART (AND LUNGS)

It happened!  It was indeed a drama.

Prior to the race, one of the interesting topics was the rivalry between local favorite Mary Grace delos Santos and Aileen Tolentino of Cagayan de Oro in the 42K Womens category of the Cebu City Marathon.

De los Santos was leading most of the 42km distance until less than 1km from the finish line, when Tolentino, giving her all out, overtook her for good, crossed the finish line, and... collapsed!

The series of photos below was captured by Igi Maximo of TeamMaximo who was waiting for the other team members to arrive at the finish line:

That's why they call the Marathon the ultimate in running.

Weak legs... big heart.

Cebuano hospitality.  Jacs Jacalan of the organizing CERC helping her recover.

What's on her mind?  Not bad for a 42,195 meter work-out and P50,000.00 richer.

Some attributed delos Santos' loss to joining too many local races which resulted in a possible burn-out.  Mary Grace said she was distracted by the chants of the local crowd.  Or was it that maybe Aileen wanted it more this time?

What's your analysis?  You can post your remarks at the Comments Section below.

A CASE OF RUNNING BURN OUT?

The best ever - SPORTS EYE By Raffy T. Uytiepo The Freeman >> The Freeman Sections >> Cebu Sports: "I knew Aileen Tolentino since she was 14 years old. She was just starting her career in my Nike Pharmaton 10K series in Cagayan de Oro. I also knew that she could beat Mary Grace Delos Santos who I think is now leading to a burn out, having participated in almost all the runs here. True enough, Aileen ended Mary Grace’s streak here as she won the race in 3:15:31 beating the Zamboanga native by 13 seconds."...

BEA MAXIMO: I WANTED TO SHOW THEM I CAN DO IT

FOR THIS FAMILY RUNNING TIME IS BONDING TIME

Published in the January 10, 2010 issue of Cebu Daily Newspaper
by Jonas Panerio, Correspondent
Rick Gabuya, Sports Editor

FOR all the intensity that is sure to envelop the prestigious Cebu City Marathon which kicks off early this morning, there is a refreshing concept that one family will be trying to imbibe into the event and it is, “A family that runs together arrives at the finish line together.”

Such is the running motto of the Maximo family as they wake up early today and participate in the first ever staging of the event. Headed by Jonathan “Maxi” Maximo, former president of the Cebu Football Association, he along with his wife Sheila and their three kids, 18-year old Ina, 14-year old Igi and 10-year old Ica, will not only be delighting themselves in the thrill of an early morning run but more so in the family bond that they forge as they share their passion for running.

Maxi and Ina, a varsity football player at the University of Sto. Tomas in Manila, will be running the half-marathon, a 21-kilometer stretch that the former has called in jest, the “Half-Mary.” The rest of the Maximo family will be running the five kilometer distance.

“I started running in 2008 and I have always tried to get my family to try it. You can really see the benefits of running but in this case, the family bonding is even more important. I'm just so delighted that all of them are running today,” said Maximo who informed that it was in December of last year where they all finally decided to go all in for the event.

DIFFERENT DISTANCES

Ina, who has been into football ever since she was a kid, will be trying to utilize the endurance that she has built playing the sport into finishing the grueling distance. The saving grace is that her dad will be right by her side every step of the way and her family will be cheering her on at the finish line.

“The challenge is there and I wanted my daughter to experience her first half-marathon in her hometown where she has family to cheer her on,” Maxi added.

He also said that his wife's foray today will be her first try at the 5K distance, where she plans to run the first three kilometers and walk the rest of the way. Ica, his youngest daughter and a student at the Sacred Heart School-Hijas, is into ballet but is also into running. Ica added that she plans to finish just ahead of her mom and hopefully not get lost.

Igi on the other hand, a football player at the PAREF-Springdale, is expected to run just ahead of her mom and sister and wait at the finish line, to take pictures of the family.

Maxi also shared this thought which he hopes will inspire other families to run together in future events, “I hope that through this event, people will see the bright side of exercise. The miracle isn't that we finished. The miracle is that we had the courage to start.” /Correspondent Jonas Panerio

TEAM MAXIMO SIGNS UP FOR RACE

TEAM Maximo of PaBolFC is indeed running for Cebu City’s public... roads!

We have beaten the deadline and there is no more turning back.

We are dead set for the most anticipated running event this year, the Cebu City Marathon 2010. And we will finish the race!

I’m so delighted that the entire family is into running now, an activity that not only benefits your health but can also be used as your bonding time among your loved ones.

A family that runs together... arrives at the finish line!

This sporting event should be fully supported by the entire Cebuano community. If others travel to other places to join marathons, there is no reason why we should not join our very own local event. Ato ni bay!

Ina, my 18-year-old daughter, who is now studying in Manila, wants to come home and experience this sporting extravaganza.

She wants to run her first 21K not in Manila, not even abroad, but in her hometown. The family members and her friends will be waiting for her when she crosses the finish line. Cool.

Fred Lebow, who started the now world-famous NY Marathon, once said, “In running, it doesn’t matter whether you come in first, in the middle of the pack, or last. You can say, ‘I have finished.’ There is a lot of satisfaction in that.”

As a parting shot, let me share this thought: “The miracle isn’t that we finished. The miracle is that we had the courage to start. And if I were a resident of Cebu, I should not let this moment pass. Let’s all join and enjoy the Cebu City Marathon!!! See you at the finish line.”

So what are you waiting for? Apil na ta!

A MATTER OF PERCEPTION

Life is hard because we see the obstacles, not the goals.
Life is painful because we see the tears, not the smiles.
Its the way we look at things that makes this world worthwhile, not our judgement.
