MAXIMO: REFORMS BEFORE ELECTIONS

THE Cebu Football Association wants to make sure everything will be in place before it finally holds its long-delayed elections, which will hopefully happen at the end of the month.

Former president Jonathan Maximo, who resigned from his post last Dec. 31, said they are currently in the process of sending out invitations to different clubs and teams.

“We wanted to call on the teams and clubs so that we can explain to them the structure that we need to put up,” Maximo said.

Teams and clubs will be divided into districts, where they will then choose their representatives, something Maximo believes, is something the football association (FA) should initiate.

The crucial part, according to Maximo, is to define the club from a team, group them into districts and for each district to elect their own sets of officers.

“We need to organize them so that we can move forward,” Maximo said.

Maximo added that once these representatives are pinpointed, these people will make up the management committee. They will be the ones who will carry the voice of their district and will have the voting power.

“If each district is represented, then whenever there are meetings, plans and other decision-makings of the FA, the districts will have a voice. He will be the one to disseminate the information to his own district,” Maximo said.

Maximo said they do not want to hurry the elections because what is important is for the clubs to understand the structure the current board wants to follow.

Once the management committee will be formed, then the election will take place. Nine new members of the board of directors will be elected and among them, they will decide who will sit as officers.

Maximo, who had announced he was not seeking for reelection, said that he had suggested a new scheme for the term of the officers.

“Based on experience, a four-year term is too long. I proposed it to be shortened to two years. After all, officers can still seek for reelection after their term expires,” Maximo said. (MCB)

VILLAFLOR: SCARF TACTICS

What in the world was Tom Hanks doing in the sports segment of a cable news channel?

A scarf Hanks was wearing around his neck had caught the eye of a reporter, who promptly asked the actor what’s with the rug. (For a moment there, I thought Hanks was going to hang himself for making that forgettable religious conspiracy movie.)

It turned out the American actor is a big fan of an English football team.

Emblazoned on the scarf were the huge letters “Aston Villa Football Club” and its logo. What better place to wear the scarf than in London at the premier of his new movie Charlie Wilson’s War two nights ago.

Asked why he was rooting for the club, Hanks gurgled: “Well I know a good football match when I see one. Years ago I was watching on TV a pretty good game with Aston Villa and I thought ‘I like that name and those colors.’ Anybody can root for Chelsea for gods’ sake!”

Likeable colors. Well said, Forest.

Sadly for Hanks though, Villa isn’t doing much good football these days, with many of its key players suffering from technical skill problems especially during big matches.

The club, seventh in the English Premier League, could find itself hovering in the middle of the table later in the season. A bad prospect for Villa fans, but at least they have the American actor’s support.

Good thing that Hanks mentioned Chelsea because the club from London - some 160 kilometers from Villa’s Birmingham — aren’t playing scintillating football either. The former champions are languishing at third place in the domestic league, six points behind leaders Arsenal.

To make matters worse, the London club is facing some serious problems with manpower. Apart from a host of injuries to its key players, Chelsea are set to lose Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou, Mikel Jon Obi and Michael Essien to the African Cup of Nations from Jan. 20 to Feb. 10.

The club is so desperate it rushed to sign Nikolas Anelka for 15 million pounds from Bolton Wanderers in a deal both parties confirmed yesterday.

The Blues seem to be a weakening force. And with the swashbuckling Jose Mourinho out of the picture, the team has generated less interest over the past few months. Avram Grant, you see, isn’t much of a charismatic character.

But Chelsea’s owner Roman Abra-hmovic doesn’t mind if his new club manager looks like Uncle Fester of the Adam’s Family, so long as he snags the prize the Russian billionaire craves the most: the UEFA Champions League title.

It’s no secret that Mourinho’s failure to win the title was a big factor in the falling out between the Portuguese manager and his Russian boss. Sure, “The Special One” won for the club back-to-back domestic titles, but European glory lies elsewhere. Only by wining the Champions League can Chelsea validate its claim as one of the world’s truly big clubs.

And then there’s the big bucks. What businessman would not want to get his hands on some 100 million euros in prize money, gate receipts, sponsorships and TV earnings for the winner of the Champions League? Roman knows what he wants. This time Grant can get it for him, perhaps. But how?

Back in England, the Israeli manager can opt to end the domestic season in the top four, enough to qualify for the next Champion’s League season, so as not to strain his team as it regroups, and focus his resources in getting to the finals in Russia. Liverpool is fairly good at this strategy. It wouldn’t hurt Chelsea to follow the same path.

Imagine the Champion’s League finals: a sea of blue in Abrahmovich’s Moscow. And all of England united, just this once, for the otherwise much reviled Blues. Grant can go for glory. Hanks can keep his maroon scarf.

VILLAFLOR: NO PUNDIT INTENDED

ON the last day of 2007, Jonathan “Maxi” Maximo officially stepped down as Cebu Football Association (CebuFA) president, after four years at the helm.

“I am not running for president anymore,” his text message read. He had told me of this plan as early two years ago when I bumped into him at the Asean Football Federation Championship Qualifiers in Bacolod.

Maxi, a soft-spoken and affable gentleman, sounded relieved when I called him up yesterday. Four years of running this province-wide organization must be an ordeal. (In that period, he’s had his fair share of fulfillment, but that merits another column.)

You see, the CebuFA presidency is a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” post. Every Cebuano football pundit will tell you how it should be run, but none of them wants to do it. Just read the online forums.

So who’s now standing in Maxi’s shoes? No one. Elections are tentatively set on the third week of January yet after the Sinulog frenzy, while the CebuFA Board will run official matters, Maxi said.

In the last few years, Cebu football has evolved, at least in terms of participation among the clubs, players and their fanatical kin. There is now a vibrant football community here, and it continues to grow.

How much of this growth we can attribute to the CebuFA’s efforts, no one’s sure. But if there is to be continuity in CebuFA’s projects and vision, then the Board must fix its lineup right away. Another postponement, and that’s an extra time too many. Exhausting, unexciting.

Besides, only after the elections can Maxi really look forward to doing what he loves best, like nurturing that wonderful football club of his, PaBol FC. Without the headaches, without the pundits snapping at his heels.

* * *

There’s a reason why the politics of football are seldom on the papers: the really good stuff is on the field, the way it should be.

And I promise, dear accidental reader (Happy New Year, by the way), I shall write less of football politics and more of goals, kicks and tackles.

For starters, here’s the good news: the first football tournament of the year will kick off today at the Don Bosco football grounds in Labangon, Cebu City.

It’s an 11-a-side tournament held on weekends. (My team, the fledgling UP Alumni FC, is bracketed with powerhouses UC, Inter Lapulapu, USP Alumni and United FC. I’ll be watching from the sidelines. To take notes.)

And then there’s the Thirsty Cup on Feb. 15, 16 and 17 at the Cebu City Sports Center. To many Cebuano football fans, this is the festival that started it all.

Expect this year’s installment to be as competitive as those in the previous years. Gone are the days when 10-0 routs ruled the fields.

At least the Davids of Cebu football have a 20-minute chance against the Goliaths. Then again, David slew Goliath, didn’t he?

CEBU BOOTERS GET INT'L ATTENTION

For the first time, local football received international attention.

The ASEAN Football Federation official website bannered the final action in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Incorporated (CESAFI) between USJ-R and the University of San Carlos.

The site, www.aseanfootball.org, ran the story “USJ-R Regain Cebu Schools Cup” and reported how USJ-R finally beat archrival USC 2-0 in the final match.

The story went to relate how USJ-R tried in the last two years to regain the title, only to be stopped cold by USC every time. Furthermore, the story described how USJ-R’s Robert Mamac and Anselmo Pulmones netted the winning goals.

The news item came out with an action picture of a USJ-R player vying for the ball during the final match.

The story was one of the only two stories about the Philippines featured in the site for 2007; the other was about the candidacy of former Filipino international player Mariano Araneta, Jr. for the presidency of the Philippine Football Federation.

“Yes, it is the first time in ASEAN football site. We are happy that Cebu football is recognized in international level,” said Jonathan Maximo, president of the Cebu Football Association and the tournament manager of CESAFI Football tournament.

VILLAFLOR: A MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION

Mike Limpag, Sports Editor

MULTITUDES the world over speak of football as though it were a religion. But when the top sport’s deity descended on our shores early this month with $400,000 manna for Philippine football, hardly anyone sang a song of praise.

Instead, the windfall was met with great caution.

Joseph “Sepp” Blatter, president of the International Football Federation or Fifa, was just as wary. He and the rest of the football gods have been witness to Philippine football’s downward spiral over the last century.

Blatter yearns for Philippine football’s golden years. But every time the sport is poised to take a big stride, it trips on its own, face down, and humiliates itself before the international football community.

As of this writing, the Men’s National Team is stuck at 179 out of 201 spots in the Fifa rankings. And why it failed to send a men’s team to the Southeast Asian Games after a decent performance at the start of the year is beyond me.

“Help yourself and heaven will help you,” Blatter admonished the believers, doers and the heathen during the centennial celebration of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) in Manila last Dec. 7.

Let’s hope everybody paid attention because when a top sports official starts calling out to heaven, you know we’re in deep excrement. That means the new set of PFF officers have a lot in their hands.

In a country obsessed with basketball and Judy Ann’s constant mutation, few would bother to keep an eye on the PFF. Yet Fifa’s $250,000 yearly subsidy, aside from the $400,000 top-up aid, is a lot of money, and how that trickles down to the grass roots is a burning question.

Will other areas such as Cebu even get loose change? One thing for certain is that the Cebu football community helps itself. The numerous tourneys and festivals for the past three years, many of which are independently funded, is testament to that.

The coming year will be no less vibrant in Cebu. But in the capital where the crucial decisions are made, 2008 can be a make-or-break year for Philippine football. Let’s just hope that the PFF officials share Blatter’s vision and lamentation. To them, enlightenment, please.

* * * You must be wondering, dear accidental reader, why this column suddenly popped up on this page. The truth is, this column is six months overdue, and I now have a vague idea how it feels to give birth. It is excruciating to undergo labor when you’re pregnant with ideas and there’s not much pushing, huffing and puffing. Call this writing’s equivalent of a caesarian section. You get the drift.

But I am just a taker of notes of the sport I love best (I dig boxing but, football, I can play). Lately though, I have found my weekends devoid of football games. Blame this on my feeble joints.

So what must one do when the spirit is willing but the body, stubborn? Write.

Last I heard, nobody tears ligaments typing. Besides, the sport can do with one less lout off the field. But I suffer from a niggling urge.

The Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano, a frustrated footballer himself, couldn’t have said it any better: “By writing, I was going to do with my hands what I never could accomplish with my feet: irredeemable klutz, disgrace of the playing fields, I had no choice but to ask of words what the ball I so desired denied me.”

So embrace me, dear muse of sports writing.

USJ-R RETAINS CESAFI FOOTBALL CROWN

The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Spiking Jaguars exacted vengeance at the University of San Carlos (USC) Golden Booters, dethroning the Carolinians via a 2-0 whitewash to emerge as the new football champion of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) yesterday at the USC-TC field in Talamban.

It was no less a sweet redemption for USJ-R, which lost in the final last year to the same rivals.

USC may have played with cooler heads, but USJ-R proved to be the hungrier and more determined squad.

Both squads were scoreless in the first half. As the game progressed, tension flared up with six players from USJ-R being slapped with a yellow card each as warning for unsportsmanlike behavior. They are Joven Torres, Paul dela Victoria, Arlon Sabal, Edward Lachica and Eduardo Buglasa.

Inspite of that, USJ-R coach Joselito Bono was able to pacify his players and let them focus in the game and just do whatever they can.

And as good soldiers, Robert Mamac and Alselmo Palmones stepped up the gas and sink a goal each in a span of seven minutes. Mamac found the back of the net at the 72nd. Less than 10 minutes later, Palmares delivered another goal for USJ-R.

Thus, USJ-R regained its throne after two years of waiting. USJ-R was the king of CESAFI collegiate football college until the Univesity of the Visayas (UV) halted its reign in 2005.

The Spiking Jaguars made it to the championship last year but lost to USC.

The rest of the USJ-R players are Marvin Abelgas, Franco Cedullo, Michael De los Santos, Ronan De Guzman, Ralph Gaite, Heron Isugan, Jonathan Jamili, Floren Luague, Robert Manayon, Adrianne Mejaran, Rowell Unabia, Earl Yagao, and Nathaniel Yburan.

In the battle for third, University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Spiking Panthers defeated the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters via penalty shotout, 4-2.

Among those who delivered the winning goals for USPF were John Cosayan, Rodriguez,Deck Pacana and Jonathan Tan.

The event ended on a successful note under the supervision of tournament director and former Cebu Football Association (CebuFA) president Jonathan “Maxi” Maximo.

USJ-R DETHRONES USC FOR FIFTH CESAFI CROWN

TEMPERS rose and bodies banged under the heat of the sun as the grudge match between University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and University of San Carlos (USC) for the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. football title unveiled yesterday at the USC-TC football field.

USJR, a former four-time champion of the event, finally grasped the golden trophy once again after two years of failing to do so in a 2-0 victory over the defending champion.

The ravenous USC team started out strong in the first few minutes of the game and attacking USJR, getting one shot after the other and almost scoring a goal, but USJR’s defense proved up to the task.

After a scoreless first half, the two teams continued to battle for the first goal in the second half and a momentary loss of concentration had the USC behind.

While most of the team were busy contesting a perceived foul on the other end of the field, USJR counterattacked and Paul dela Victoria’s beautiful cross found Robert Mamac by his lonesome for the first goal in the 72nd minute.

Dela Victoria upped the intensity of the match as, while the perceive no call was still fresh on USC’s mind, he took off his uniform to show his undershirt with the words “It’s showtime” to the USJ-R bench.

Dela Victoria got a yellow card for his theatrics, while teammates Joven Torres, Arlon Sabal, Edward Lachica and Eduardo Buglosa and USC’s Hubert Buot joined him in the referee’s notebook for various infractions.

Equalizer

USC tried to press for the equalizer but a defensive hole at their right flank left Anselmo Pulmones open for another uncontested, leaving the USC keeper helpless.

As time dwindled, the USC team was visibly tired, while USJ-R held on to its defense to preserve the score.

Relaxed

USJ-R’s coach, Joselito Bono, who normally is a loud presence at the baseline as he hollers instructions, was more relaxed and was even smiling as the match drew to a close.

“After two years we finally are the champions again. I’m really happy and proud of my team for winning this championship” said Coach Bono of USJR.

Earlier University of Southern Philippines Foundation grabbed the third place as they defeated University of Cebu, 4-2, in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw at regulation.

Joseph Rodriguez of USPF drew first blood as he struck a goal in the 16th minute and Michael Diano made it 2-0 in the 39th minute.

However, UC fought back and Rodney Gandiongco scored in the 66th minute before Jessie Roy Melgo got the equalizer in the 76th.

In the penalty shootout USPF converted their first four shots, while UC missed two, giving USPF the victory.

The Sacred Heart School-Hijas De Jesus Senior Girls Team bagged the Girls-17 title in the 1st Patid sa TC Football Festival recently at the University of San Carlos- Technological Center field in Brgy. Talamban, this city.

The SHS-HJ belles did not concede a single goal in sweeping all their three games in the elimination round. They beat SHS-Jesuit, 1-0, and then pummeled Little Angels Montessori School (LAMS) 12-0, courtesy of the three goals each from Bea Maximo and Jackie Ting, two goals from Erika Casas and one goal each from Banban Yu, Mara Dado, Maris Ting and Lea-Ann Calejesan.

The SHS-HJ Seniors sustained their sizzling run by whipping sister-team SHS-HJ, 2-0. Banban Yu and Maris Ting delivered the winning goals.

SHS-HJ, behind the heroics of Banban Yu and Erika Casa, then thumped San Roque FC, 2-0, in the final to clinch the championship.

For topping Group A with a clean 3-0 slate, SHS-HJ Seniors also advanced into the women’s open, but lost to the Bulwarks via penalty shootout, 2-0. Bulwarks is composed of former varsity players who are now employed with different companies.

The SHS-Hijas Seniors are composed of Gail Oliamot, Bea Maximo, Erika Casas, Banban Yu, Jackie Ting, Lea-Ann Calejesan, Nicole Chanlim, Regine Lim, Mara Dado, Maris Ting, Karina Hilado and Monica Lee. Their coach is Dom Villamor assisted by Richard Canedo and Chris Escudero.

Interestingly, the SHS-HJ Seniors had already established several records including back-to-back titles in the San Roque Football Festival (2006 and 2007), championship in this year’s Milo Little Olympics Visayas, and first runner-up honors in the 2006 Mizuno Football Festival.

SHS-HJ COACHING STAFF WINS LAHUG FOOTBALL FESTIVAL

Courtesy of THE FREEMAN Newspaper (www.philstar.com)
Dec 29, 2007 Issue. By Caecent Noot-Magsumbol, Staff Reporter

The Sacred Heart School-Hijas de Jesus Coaching Staff turned negative outlook into positive to clinch the men’s open crown of the 1st Lahug Football Festival at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) field.

The newly-formed SHS-HJ Coaching Staff frustrated Don Bosco Alumni Football Club, 2-1, via penalty shootout in the final.

The victory of the SHS-HJ Coaching Staff booters was unexpected as they almost withdrew from the tournament after losing their first game against Barili by default. They only had six players who came on time.

“The team’s performance was totally unexpected. We almost withdraw from the tournament. I was disgusted when they forfeited their first game when the team was not able to field the minimum required 7 players to start the game. The others came in very late. Very unprofessional,” said team director Jonathan “Maxi” Maximo.

Maximo lectured the coaches that they are supposed to be role models to their players, yet they too lacked discipline.

After the discussion, everybody committed, not exactly to win the title, but at least to book a semifinal seat.

SHS-HJ was right on target as it landed No.2 in Bracket A with a 3-2 win-loss record.

SHS-HJ won against USPF-B, 2-0, Talisay Football Club, 3-0, and NTD FC-A, 1-0. Its second loss was inflicted by Don Bosco Alumni, 0-1.

In the semifinal round, SHS-HJ upset Bracket B top seed Hiroshi Football Club, 1-0. Former RP team member Richard Cañedo nailed the winning goal for the Jesuits.

Having been beaten by Don Bosco in the elimination, SHS-HJ Coaches worked doubly hard on their defense resulting into a scoreless draw at the end of the regulation period, thus, the penalty shootout.

Don Bosco’s first kicker scored, but Jade Paghubasan of SHS-HJ quickly sank the equalizer. The Bosconians flubbed in their next two attempts and in the ensuing sequence, Cañedo hit a goal to seal SHS-HJ’s resounding triumph. — Caecent No-ot Magsumbol

USC SEEKS REPEAT OVER USJ-R IN CESAFI FOOTBALL

by Caecent No-ot Magsumbol, Staff ReporterManny Villaruel, Sports Editor

A grudge title match today between the University of San Carlos and the University of San Jose-Recoletos highlights the final day of CESAFI’s football competition at USC Talamban football field.

USC will try to avenge its loss to USJ-R in the elimination round that nearly booted them out of title contention, and repeat as champion.

USJ-R, on the other hand, seeks redemption after USC beat them in the title match last year.

Games today: USC Talamban Football Field

8am - USPF vs. UC (battle for third)

10am- USC vs. USJ-R (championship game)

Both USC and USJ-R barged into the final after winning their crossover semifinal games.

USC showed too much class in blanking the University of Southern Philippines Foundation 5-0.

USJ-R found itself on top of the standings after erstwhile leader the University of the Visayas got the axe for allegedly using two players with “academic deficiency.”

The Jaguars didn’t disappoint after getting the top spot and went on to beat the University of Cebu 2-0.

UC and USPF will provide the appetizer for the championship game as they play for third place.—Caecent No-ot Magsumbol

USC SETS UP TITLE CLASH WITH USJ-R

Courtesy of SUN STAR DAILY Newspaper (www.sunstar.com.ph)December 16, 2007 Sunday issue

Mike Limpag, Sports Editor

DEFENDING champion University of San Carlos (USC) booked a return to the final after a 5-0 lopsided win over the second ranked Universty of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USPF) in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. yesterday at the USC-TC football field.

USC, which finished the elimination round with two draws and two losses got on board with Pomposo Atillo in the ninth minute for an early 1-0 lead over USPF, which owned a 1-2-1 card in the elimination.

Real star

However, the real star of the show was Ryan Lim as he scored a hat trick in the 45th, 72nd and 78th minutes to seal the fate of USPF. Kyle Soriano of USC also had a goal in the 67th minute.

USPF’s Michael Diano and USC’s Melvin Elle and Cliff Bacolod were all booked with yellow cards.

In the second game of the semifinals former four-time champion University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) ran over the University of Cebu (UC), 2-0.

USJR was hungry for the spot at the finals and UC was just thankful to have a second chance and hoped to proceed to the finals. But it wasn’t UC’s day after USJ-R ran them over in the second half.

UC, which finished the elimination round two draws and two losses, got the semifinal spot after Cesafi nullified the University of the Visayas’ wins for fielding ineligible players.

The last-ranked team managed to hold off the USJ-R defense before Robert Mamac stopped the drought and struck at the 50th minute to score the first goal of the game. Marvin Abelgas followed up with a goal 15 minutes after.

Red card

Meanwhile, Francis Navaja of UC and Jonathan Jamili of USJR both got yellow cards, while UC’s Norcel Hangalay was given the only red card of the game Hangalay will sit out next week’s matches.

It will be a grudge match of last year’s final match as the 2006 champion USC clashes with 2006 first runnerup USJ-R next week for the championship game. USPF will battle it out with UC for third place still at the USC-TC football field. (EKA)

USC SETS FINAL BATTLE VS USJ-R IN CESAFI FOOTBALL

Defending champion University of San Carlos (USC) Green Booters sent a strong message to the rest that they are not yet done after they blanked the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), 5-0, to grab a final seat in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) football competition yesterday at the USC-TC Field.

Pomposo Atillo broke the ice of the match with nine minutes gone by in the game before Ryan Lim chipped in a goal for a 2-0 San Carlos lead at halftime.

In the final half, USC kept its relentless offensive despite Melvin Elle and Cliff Bacolod were both slapped with yellow cards.

Kyle Soriano found the back of the net at the 67th, then Lim completed a hat-trick at the 72nd and 78th to vault the Carolinians to the December 22 championship battle.

USC, thus, set up a title showdown with University of San Jose – Recoletos (USJ-R), which earlier booked a final ticket with a 2-0 drubbing of the University of Cebu (UC).

Both teams were scoreless in the first half, but Robert Mamac and Marvin Abelgas firing goals at the 50th and 65th minute.

USPF will now play UC for the third place honors. – Caecent No-ot Magsumbol

UV DISQUALIFIED FROM CESAFI SEMIFINALS

Courtesy of CEBU DAILY NEWS (www.cebudailynews.com.ph)December 15, 2007 Saturday issue
By Jonas Panerio, Correspondent
Rick Gabuya, Sports Editor

The semifinal cast of the CESAFI football tournament will have a major overhaul after top-seed University of the Visayas was disqualified with the discovery of academic deficiencies on two of their players.

This was divulged by CESAFI Commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy Thursday afternoon after a meticulous investigation uncovered academic deficiencies for both Adrianne Calinawan and Jerson Omnos, resulting in the team’s disqualification.

UV’s ouster opened the door for the University of Cebu Webmasters to see action in the next round, which starts today at the University of San Carlos football field in Talamban. UC through, will have its hands full as it faces newly minted top seed and four-time champions University of San Jose – Recoletos Kicking Jaguars at 8 am.

USJ-R will be looking for a repeat of their 3-1 elimination round victory over UC. Fueling USJ-R’s bid Adrianne Mejaran, Marvin Abelgas, Paul dela Victoria and Robert Mamac.

The other semis pairing pits second seed University of Southern Philippines against defending champion University of San Carlos with both teams expected to go all out for a win following their 2-2 draw in the preliminaries./CORRESPONDENT JONAS PANERIO

FR. VIC UY: PHILIPPINE SPORTS CHAPLAIN

Courtesy of Sun Star Newspaper (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/)
Thursday, December 13, 2007 issue
by John Pages, Columnist - Match Point

CONGRATULATIONS to Cebu’s very own Fr. Vicente Uy for being appointed yesterday as the executive director of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

Next to PSC Chairman Butch Ramirez, his position wields the most power.

But Fr. Vic, one of the humblest people I’ve met, is not overawed. In an interview, he told Manila Bulletin’s Nick Giongco: “I don’t look at it as a position of power.”

At 7:15 p.m. yesterday, I got the chance to talk to Fr. Vic for a few minutes. I congratulated him and asked how his day went. “It’s only my second day so, as expected, I was very busy,” he said over the phone. “I’m at the airport now to welcome our SEA Games athletes who are returning home.”

I’ve known Fr. Vic Uy for many years now and it’s hard to find a nicer person. Here in Cebu, he yielded influence. At the University of San Carlos, he held one of the school’s highest positions as VP for Finance. To relinquish his role, he sought the permission of USC President Fr. Rod Salazar.

“I asked for a ‘leave of absence’ from USC,” I recall Fr. Vic, 58, telling me a few months back. “And good thing my colleagues at USC understood my mission to help RP sports.”

Here in Cebu, apart from his huge responsibility at USC, he was regional head of the PSC. During the 23rd SEA Games two years ago, he was overall chairperson of the Volunteers Committee.

Fr. Vic Uy’s favorite sport?

Tennis. I got the chance to play doubles with him a few times. Once, at the USC Main Campus court, we rallied against the pride of USC, the Siso siblings (Nino, Sally Mae, and Sallydine). On another occasion, we played doubles at the Casino Español. I remember that as memorable because we came from behind (trailing 4-7, I believe) before winning in a tiebreak.

When asked by Giongco if he’s aware of his big responsibility at the PSC, Fr. Vic responded in his usual no-nonsense but effective way: “As long as you uphold the law and do what is right, I don’t see any problem that will come our way.”

How about saying Mass? Is he still allowed?

“Under normal circumstances,” wrote Giongco, “Uy is not allowed to celebrate Mass but he is armed with a document from the head of the Catholic Church to continue holding services ‘only for the athletes.’ ”And so celebrate mass he did for the athletes.

“When I was in Thailand, I held Mass for three straight days with the athletes and officials,” said Fr. Vic. “The first was on the first Friday of the month, Immaculate Conception and Sunday in the presence of athletes, coaches and officials from the PSC and POC.”

For with Fr. Vic Uy, the PSC has one man with many talents: a proven leader, trustworthy servant, tennis-loving athlete, and, best of all, RP sports’ spiritual adviser.

SEMIFINALS NIXED AFTER CESAFI DISQUALIFIES UV PLAYERS

courtesy of SUN STAR DAILY Newspaper (www.sunstar.com.ph)December 9, 2007 Sunday issue
by Mike Limpag, Sports Editor &
Edri K. Aznar, Correspondent

IT WAS nothing short of throwing a monkey wrench down the machine.

What was supposed to be the start of the exciting semifinal round of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. football tournament was postponed yesterday after the office of the commissioner found two players from the University of the Visayas players to be ineligible to play.

The move comes almost a month after the event started and the players were screened.

A memo of the disqualification was written last Friday by the office of Felix Tiukinhoy, who is the Cesafi commissioner, but was handed to Sherwin Rodriguez, head of the football officials, only yesterday forcing the cancellation of the games.

If the disqualification pushes through, all of UV’s previous games will be nullified and the University of Cebu, which finished last, could get its spot in the semifinals.

However, UV head coach Eddie Buot isn’t giving up that easy.

Memo
Buot said they got a memo asking that the players complete there requirements last Dec. 5.

“The memo was written on Dec. 4, but I got it last Dec. 5 in the morning. In the afternoon I had Frederick Alazas (UV captain) comply with the requirements,” Buot said.

Among the questioned requirements were the grade of one player and the study load of the other.

“We have already complied. As to the grades, some of the teachers were not able to submit there grades last month (in time for the screening),” Buot said.

Buot said he will raise the issue with UV this Monday and is hoping that the incident is just a bad case of miscommunication among the Cesafi officials. (EKA, ML)

UV BOOTERS HOLD ON TO TOP SPOT

THE UNIVERSITY of the Visayas secured the top spot in the standings heading into next week’s semifinal round after beating the University of Southern Philippines, 2-0, in the Cesafi football tournament yesterday at the University of San Carlos field.

The win gave UV nine points with a 3-0-1 (win-loss-draw) slate.

A crucial span of five minutes in the second half proved to be USP’s undoing as it allowed Junard Aguilar to escape with a goal in the 67th minute. Frederick Alazas then sealed the deal for UV with a goal in the 72nd minute of the game.

Meanwhile, the defending champions University of San Carlos’ downward spiral continued yesterday as it lost to USJ-R, 1-0.

In spite of the loss, USC will still make it to the semifinal round as it has a higher goal difference against the University of Cebu, with whom they found themselves tied with. The semifinal pairing will pit UV against USC while USJ-R tackles USP next weekend./CORRESPONDENT JONAS PANERIO.

JAGUARS TRAMPLE USC, 1-0, IN CESAFI FOOTBALL

PLAYING in a muddy field amidst the strong downpour, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) denied University of San Carlos (USC) another chance at earning three points with a 1-0 win yesterday in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. football tournament at the USC Technological Center football field.

The match saw a heated battle between a team aiming to be on top and a team struggling for its first victory.

With the rain and the mud making balance difficult, tempers flared, bodies banged and players slipped while another got sent out.

Marvin Abelgas of USJR struck the only goal of the game in the 67th minute and gave the former four-time champion its second win against a draw and a loss for a solid hold of the second spot.

USC settled for fourth place, two draws and two losses, finishing just three goals ahead of the University of Cebu.

Meanwhile, in the second game University of the Visayas (UV) remained undefeated and handed University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) its first loss of the tournament, 2-0 win.

UV finished the elimination round firmly at first with three wins and a draw, while USPF settled for third with a win, a draw and a loss.

Junard Aguilar scored his third goal for UV in the tournament in the 67th minute. And Frederick Alazas added in the 72nd for a 2-0 count.

In next week’s semifinals, UV will face the fourth-ranked USC in a battle of the last two champions and last year’s finalists, while USJ-R will face USPF.

USJ-R will miss the services of Arlon Sabal in the semifinal after he got two yellow cards in a five-minute span in the first half. Sabal got his first yellow in the 29th and another in the 34th. UV’s Jomar Labastida and USPF’s Christian Deck Pacana were also booked for yellow cards. (EKA)

UNIVERSITY of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) salvaged a 1-1 draw with the University of Cebu (UC) in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. football yesterday at the University of San Carlos Technological Center (USC-TC) football field.

UC is still winless and is on the brink of elimination. It has a 0-2-2 win-loss-draw record while USPF gunned its second draw of the tournament and has a 1-0-2 win-loss-draw record.

UC’s hopes for a semifinals slot rests in the hands of USC. If USC losses to USJR today by more than five goals then UC advances to the semifinals but if USC wins then UC will be eliminated from the tournament.

Rodney Gandionco of UC struck the first goal of the game in the 25th minute but was answered by an equalizer from USPF’s Mark Gallardo 17 minutes after. This is Gallardo’s second goal of the tournament.

Meanwhile, a yellow card was handed to Racen Saiton of USPF in the 40th minute.

Meanwhile, in the second game it was a scoreless battle of former champions as University of the Visayas (UV) and University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJR) fought to a 0-0 draw. UV had three players booked with yellow cards, Howard Dolino in the sixth Fredrick Alazas in the 44th and Josaphat Sacil in the 59th minute. (EKA)

The University of the Visayas and the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, two leading contenders in the 2007 CESAFI football tournament, were held to draws by their respective rivals.

UV tried but couldn’t gain any headway against the University of San Jose-Recoletos while USPF and University of Cebu fought to a 1-1 deadlock.

The draw enabled UV to hold the top spot in the standings. USPF, on the hand, inch closer to tying USJ-R for the second spot.

UV, however, paid dearly in its physical game against USJ-R as three of its leading players were yellow carded. Howard Dolino got the first yellow card in just six minutes of the first half and teammates Frederick Alazas and Josaphat Sacil got the yellow cards in the 44th and 59th minute marks, respectively. — Caecent No-ot Magsumbol
