5K MARATHON!?

I Just Ran A 5k Marathon! : On Running Jargon and Common Newbie Gaffes The Philippine Star >> News >> Sports: "I Ran a 5k Marathon!
Okay, so you got excited. You just finished your first 5k race, and your adrenalin levels are at an all-time high. Next thing you know, you’re telling all your friends that you “just ran a 5k marathon”.

While it may be a matter of pure semantics, “5k” and “marathon” do not belong in the same sentence, and may earn you a puzzled look or two from a seasoned runner. A marathon in the strictest sense is 42.195 kilometers, just a wee bit farther than your 5k. A lot of people train long and hard to be able to call themselves “marathoners”, so keep that in mind."...

RUNNING LONGER & FASTER

Running Longer and Faster The Philippine Star >> News >> Sports: "Running involves a combination of aerobic (oxygen-powered) and anaerobic (absence of oxygen) activities.

Our running muscles have two types of fibers, the “Slow-Twitch” and the “Fast-Twitch”, which are randomly mixed depending on our genes. Fast-Twitch muscles are generally more powerful (and bulky) but they fatigue more easily, whereas the Slow-Twitch muscles are relatively weaker but are virtually tireless and efficient in consuming oxygen (aerobic).

Marathoners (42 Kms) and ultra-marathoners (more than 42 Kms) have dominant slow-twitch muscles, which explain their awesome endurance to run long distances.

Meanwhile, sprinters running 100 meters up to 400 meters have a lot of powerful fast-twitch muscles fibers. Elite runners from 800 meters up to the marathon (42 k) have different combinations of these fibers. The longer the distance a runner excels, generally the more dominant the slow-twitch muscle fibers are."...

RESPECT THE DISTANCE

Going the Distance The Philippine Star >> News >> Sports: "The lesson I learned was, respect the distance. Have utmost reverence for it.

We all develop differently, having different lifestyles, different footstrikes, different body types, different goals. Don't feel left out that all your friends are doing the 21k while you do the 5k.

Find your niche, find what challenge you, find worth embarking on. Who knows? You could be built to conquer the 5k event if you focus your energies into it."...

LIMPAG: CHASING JOHN & HAIDE

by Mike Limpag
Fair Play

Limpag: Chasing John Pages and Haide Acuña Sun.Star Network Online: Some walked most of the route, some made their own route.

A few started at the Press Freedom Run and somehow found their way to the finish line of the Eco-Dash Run of Ayala.

As expected, veteran runner and columnist John Pages topped the 5K division, while reporter Edri K. Aznar, who arrived late, got second. He later told colleagues that he was afraid of getting lost—since he didn’t catch the route briefing—that he just decided to follow somebody else, which turned out to be John.

Broadcaster Haide Acuña, topped the women’s division over Marlen Limpag, while Superbalita sports editor Jun Migallen, who once topped a running event straight off from a drinking session, and Irenelou Llego won the 3K division."...
