SWIMMERS MAKE IT THE HARD WAY

Phil Star.  Joseph said Lacuna and Alkhaldi are examples of how homegrown swimmers could blossom into Olympic qualifiers. “We were able to take homegrown talent, put them in serious training for six years since they were just 12 and 13 and six years later, mint new Philippine Olympians,” he said.

“Are they going to win in London? These kids are going to be up against swimmers 8 to 10 years older than them, who have swum millions of meters more than them annually. And had much more money invested in them than we could dream of. Jes and Jas are the future. They’ll compete in the Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games and one or two more Olympics if we can afford to keep them in the water... Read more

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING VS BODYBUILDING

Phil Star.  “Athletes are often confused between strength and conditioning, and bodybuilding,” said Sumulong.

For the ordinary athlete, building muscles mean building on strength, but the Filipino expert said it’s not always true, saying with added muscles, an athlete sometimes gives up a lot in strength and agility... Read more

SMART GOES FULL BLAST IN SUPPORT OF PINOY RIDERS

PhilStar.  In March, Smart also sponsored the national team competing for the Asian Cycling Championships and Asian Youth Championships both held in Malaysia.

“CYCLING is one of the sports we Filipinos can compete and excel,” said Epok Quimpo, Smart Sports Manager. “As we’ve seen in major Tours, Filipino cyclists are world-class bikers. With the qualification of Danny as the only Asian in the Olympics BMX event, this is a testament that we Filipinos can compete with the world. We hope Danny’s Olympic journey will inspire more Filipino kids to follow in his footsteps,” Quimpo added... Read more

P-NOY: YOU MADE CHANGE POSSIBLE

PhilStar.  “This is why, to all the nurses, midwives, or doctors who chose to serve in the barrios; to each new graduate who has chosen to work for the government; to each FILIPINO ATHLETE who proudly carries the flag in any corner of the globe, to each government official who renders true and honest service: You made this change possible. So whenever I come face to face with a mother who tells me, ‘Thank you, my child has been vaccinated,’ I respond: You made this happen,” Aquino said... Read more

10 COMMANDMENTS FOR SWIMMING PARENTS

by Rose Snyder, USOC (adapted from Ed Clendaniel's 10 Commendments for Little League Parents)

I. Thou shalt not impose thy ambitions on thy child.
Remember that swimming is your child's activity. Improvements and progress occur at different rates for each individual. Don't judge your child's progress based on the performance of other athletes and don't push them based on what you think they should be doing. The nice thing about swimming is every person can strive to do their personal best and benefit from the process of competitive swimming.

II. Thou shalt be supportive no matter what.
There is only one question to ask your child after a practice or a competition - "Did you have fun?" If meets and practices are not fun, your child should not be forced to participate.

III. Thou shalt not coach thy child.
You are involved in one of the few youth sports programs that offer professional coaching, do not undermine the professional coach by trying to coach your child on the side. Your job is to provide love and support and a safe place to return at the end of the day. Love and hug your child no matter what. The coach is responsible for the technical part of the job. You should not offer advice on technique or race strategy or any other area that is not yours. And above all, never pay your child for a performance. This will only serve to confuse your child concerning the reasons to strive for excellence and weaken the swimmer/coach bond.

IV. Thou shalt only have positive things to say at a swimming meet.
If you are going to show up at a swimming meet, you should be encouraging, but never criticize your child or the coach. Both of them know when mistakes have been made. And remember “yelling at” is not the same as “cheering for”.

V. Thou shalt acknowledge thy child's fears.
A first swimming meet, 500 free or 200 IM can be a stressful situation. It is totally appropriate for your child to be scared. Don't yell or belittle, just assure your child that the coach would not have suggested the event if your child was not ready to compete in it. Remember your job is to love and support your child through all of the swimming experience.

VI. Thou shalt not criticize the officials.
If you do not care to devote the time or do not have the desire to volunteer as an official, don't criticize those who are doing the best they can.

VII. Honor thy child's coach.
The bond between coach and swimmer is a special one, and one that contributes to your child's success as well as fun. Do not criticize the coach in the presence of your child, it will only serve to hurt your child's swimming.

VIII. Thou shalt be loyal and supportive of thy team
It is not wise for parents to take their swimmers and to jump from team to team. The water isn't necessarily bluer in another team's pool. Every team has its own internal problems, even teams that build champions. Children who switch from team to team are often ostracized for a long, long time by the teammates they leave behind and are slowly received by new team mates. Often times swimmers who do switch teams never do better than they did before they sought the bluer water.

IX. Thy child shalt have goals besides winning.
Most successful swimmers are those who have learned to focus on the process and not the outcome. Giving an honest effort regardless of what the outcome is, is much more important than winning. One Olympian said, "My goal was to set a world record. Well, I did that, but someone else did it too, just a little faster than I did. I achieved my goal and I lost. Does this make me a failure? No, in fact I am very proud of that swim." What a tremendous outlook to carry on through life.

X. Thou shalt not expect thy child to become an Olympian.
There are 250,000 athletes in USA Swimming and we keep a record of the Top 100 all time swimming performance by age group. Only 2% of the swimmers listed in the all-time Top 100 10 & Under age group make it to the Top 100 in the 17-18 age group and of those only a small percentage will become elite level, world class athletes. There are only 52 spots available for the Olympic Team every four years. Your child's odds of becoming an Olympian is about .0002%.

WIgiNS WINS

He added: “People laughed when I said that our aim was to win the Tour within five years with a clean British rider... Read more

VELASCO: THE OLYMPICS - WHAT IT REALLY TAKES

What does it really take to succeed at the Olympic level?

Starting early. This applies all throughout the process of trying to get into the Olympics from the time the athlete is a child. Scientific studies have shown that it takes about 10,000 hours to produce consistent world-class performance in any field, not just in sports. In ordinary terms, that is three hours a day for about 10 years. If a child begins training at the age of seven, he or she will be internationally competitive in his or her late teens, then build on that the next few years. Some world champions are still teenagers, after all... Read more

HENSON: FIL-AM IN OLYMPIC BMX RIDE OF HIS LIFE

Phil Star.  Caluag, 25, is the only Asian of 32 male qualifiers from all over the world. The BMX (Bicycle Motocross) event was introduced in the Olympic calendar in Beijing in 2008 with Latvia’s Maris Strombergs capturing the gold medal in 36.190 seconds. The schedule of competition is on Aug. 8-10 and will feature quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds. In each round, eight cyclists are engaged in a head-to-head battle, starting off with a ride down an eight-meter-high ramp then negotiating a dirt circuit that has a banked corner, S-bend transfer and jump marks. The quarterfinal and semifinals consist of three runs with the cumulative time determining the riders to advance. The finals will gather the top eight cyclists in a single-lap showdown... Read more

JUICO: CHILDREN'S SPORTS

Phil Star.  Hyman says in the interview with SL that much of the blame falls on parents’ laps who have usurped control of youth sports. “It’s not the presence of adults that is distorting youth sports. Rather the issue is our well-documented impulse to turn sports for children into a de facto professional league. Only the kids are losers here. Their voices are rarely heard, and then only to justify the questionable judgment of adults.” Hyman emphasizes that “already we’ve turned youth sports into highly rated prime-time TV programming worth millions of dollars to networks and their sponsors.”... 3 TRIATHLETES RISE ABOVE PAIN, OBSTACLES, DISABILITY

Phil Daily Inquirer.  “It’s really a blessing. It opened the gates for challenged athletes in this sport,” said Garcia. “But the more common response [among able athletes] was they have no more excuses now. Some people would say I can’t train because I’m aching here and there. Now you can’t say it because how can a person with a missing leg, a missing arm or a clubbed foot do things you say you can’t?”... Read more

CYCLING: BEST CROSS-TRAINING FOR RUNNERS

NY Times.  Cycling is the best cross-training sport for runners, Mr. Cook believes, since it builds an aerobic base while maintaining range of motion. “It forces your leg muscles to contract and increases the blood flow,” he said. “If you do it properly, you’re not really straining on the bike, the muscles aren’t getting that abused.”...

The average runner’s cadence is 180 steps per minute. “If you get on the bike and you’re riding at 90 r.p.m.’s,” you replicate that cadence, Mr. Pierce said... Read more

CHIONGBIANS MAKE WAVES IN DANAO

Published in Cebu Daily Newspaper on June 25, 2012 Monday issue
by Mars G. Alison, Correspondent
Rick Gabuya, Sports Editor

THE CHIONGBIAN siblings are making their presence felt in the triathlon scene as they finished in the top 3 of their respective categories in yesterday's 2nd leg of the Congressman Red Tri Series held in Danao City, Cebu

Having the most notable finish among the Chiongbians yesterday was 14-year old Justin, who finished third overall in the sprint distance with a time of 53 minutes and 10 seconds.

Justin of the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu opted to compete in the sprint distance rather than the half sprint for the SuperTriKids (STK) contest.  He also clinched the 16 & below title.  With this progress, Justin will be one of the competitors to look out for in the upcoming IronKids slated Aug. 4.

Justin's younger brother, Yuan, finished second in the 11-12 years old category of the STK, while his younger sister, six-year-old Savannah, ruled the under 7 years old category.

OVERALL WINNER

Franz Baguio relegated the rest of the field behind him as he finished first overall with a time of 51:23.  He also claimed the title in the 25-29 year old category.

Second overall went to former Philippine team member Chris Aldeguer, who clocked 52:15 to also top the 35-39 years old category.

Other top finishers were Vicente Cabahug in the 20-24 years old category, Ritchie Mataragnon in the 30-34 years old; and Mark Angelo Laus in the 40-44 years old.

In the STK category, Xeemon Sage Cuyos dominated the 7-8 years old, Ralph Eduard So topped the 11-12 years old male, Aaliyah Ricci Mataragnon reigned supreme in the 11-12 years old female, John Trian Tan came in first in the 13-15 years old male while Ana Patricia Maximo once again claimed the 13-15 years old female title.  The sprint relay was topped by the team of Bernie Gomez and John Benedict Sy./CORRESPONDENT MARS G. THE 2ND LEG of the Congressman Red Tri Series will kick off today in Danao City with a SuperTriKids (STK) competition to be held alongside it as a sidelight event.

The second leg of the series was supposed to be held in Camotes Island early this month but it was cancelled due to bad weather.

This Danao City leg woudl have been the third and final leg but instead it will serve as the second leg with the third leg slated July 1 at the Alegre Beach Resort in Sogod town, northern Cebu.

The Danao leg will feature a sprint distance, a mini-sprint for the STK and a duathlon.

The sprint distance will cover a 750 meter swim, 20 kilometer bike and a 5 kilometer run.  The mini sprint will cover half of the distance of each discipline while the duathlon will start with a 2.5km run, 20-km bike and end with another 2.5-km run.

Notable athlete seeing action is former Philippine team member Chris Aldeguer.

Representative Red Durano (Cebu 5th district) and his father Danao Vice Mayor Ramon "Nito" Durano will also be seeing action in the duathlon event.

The STK, on the other hand, will have about 20 hopefuls joining.

Organizer Oscar "Boying" Rodriguez said the STK will serve as the springboard for future Cebuano junior national team members.

Once again showing their potentials will be the Chiongbian brothers Justin and Yuan, STK champion 11-year old Nina Villaba, Ana Patricia Maximo and youngest participant Marco Anton Queblatin, who is just five years old.  After the third leg in Sogod, the town will also host the Sogod Mayor Moonyeen Tri-Cup on July 14./CORRESPONDENT MARS G. LIMPAG: HOW A FOOTBALL CALENDAR CAN HELP ABOITIZ CUP

Published in Sun Star Newspaper on June 18, 2012 Monday issue
by Mike Limpag, Sports Editor & Columnist, Fair Play

THERE was a time in Cebu football, when the Aboitiz Cup was the only thing that mattered and all the rest played second fiddle.

That is no longer true as it has become one of the casualties of the clash of schedules of organizers in Cebu football and teams, forced to choose between a festival and the Aboitiz Cup, prefer to join the two-day tourneys instead of Cebu’s longest running football tournament.

Worse, some teams compromise the quality of their games by joining two events in a day, which led to Paref-Springdale getting banned by the old CFA board for three years. (That of course, is another story).

One of the plans of the new board--the one whose recognition is being put on hold by a mysterious complainant in the PFF—is to bring back the prestige of the tournament and there’s a simple way of doing that.

A football calendar where the Aboitiz Cup is the centerpiece event and the rest of the footie festivals are scheduled around it.

The rest of the regular annual football tournaments—the Cebu City Olympics, the Milo Olympics, the Cesafi, Sinulog and Thirsty Cups—have regular schedules that can be easily inputted in such calendar. And if there’s a clash, it’s a matter of adjusting the dates.

There should be no pissing contests where one organizer dares a team, “just choose which one you will join” because that’s what got us here in the first place.

There’s another plan, this one coming from the Aboitizes themselves, that I hope will be revived by the new board.

Back in 2010 and in 2009, before the start of the tournament, the organizers met sports editors for help on marketing their tournament. They also wanted their website promoted--they wanted players to tweet, post news in their Facebook accounts, link fotos and the whole nine yards.

Social media, of course, was what helped make the Azkals big and organizers of the Aboitiz Cup were smart enough to recognize such power before the Azkals became mainstream.

In 2010, I told them that the website would have been a huge help in 2009 if only there were regular updates. But they said they already addressed such problem, spending hundreds of thousands of pesos for a system--including hardware--that would allow field officials to just input the data after a game and voila, you have updates.

Sadly, that too, didn’t happen and that’s something that I hope would change this year. The website, sans data, is a waste of cyberspace.

So, how does one get the data and how many men do you need to get such data for a huge event like the Aboitiz Cup that lasts for months?

I know the perfect guy to ask and unless he’s busy supporting his son’s budding cycling career, I hope former president Jonathan Maximo can give the new board tips in gathering data. He did it then, that means it can be done again.

CONTEST. There’s also another idea I threw at Maxi a few years back and it could help spur interest for Cebu football in the social media—get the school papers involved. By the time the Aboitiz Cup gets rolling, the school papers will be busy with their first edition and getting them to write about their school matches would be easy since it’s part of their job.

Students these days, they post everything they do—and don’t do—online, so a few posts about their school’s Aboitiz Cup campaign could lead to a few copycats and so on.

There could even be a contest for the student writers and photojournalists and what’s the one prize that could spur them to do their best—an all-expense trip, and a media pass, for the next Azkals home game?

IGIMAX MAKES ROUSING DEBUT IN DUATHLON

CEBU, Philippines - Luis Miguel “Igimax” Maximo made his debut in duathlon a memorable one by grabbing bronze medal in the second leg of the 2012 Powerade Philippine Duathlon Series over the weekend in Daang Hari, Alabang.

Igimax, who raced in the men’s 16-19 age group, dealt with an unfamiliar route that prevented him to speed up.

Inspite of that, Igimax managed a podium finish with a time of one hour and 40 minutes.

"I was lagging behind in the run legs but I made up for it during the bike portion. The Campagnolo 11-speed groupset and shifters installed in my YKK time trial bike made a big difference during the bike race because I have more gears to choose from and the shifting was fast and easy which resulted in a faster time," said the two-time SAC awardee.

Igimax now looks forward to joining more duathlon competitions including the final leg of the Philippine Duathlon, Clark Duathlon and the Asian Duathlon Championship scheduled late this year.

Road races, however, will remain a top priority for Igimax among all the other sporting events he is joining in.

"I never thought I can climb the podium on my first duathlon race. The competition was tough with the presence of elite and seasoned athletes. All I was after for was to gain experience and exposure since there were no road cycling races in the meantime," said Igimax.

PHL Cycling national junior member Luis Miguel Maximo of Cebu-YKKBikes.com finished with a bronze medal in the Men’s 16-19 category of the Philippine Duathlon Series last Sunday in Alabang.

Maximo, who was facing an unfamiliar race course and lacking in logistical support, negotiated the 6K run, 30K bike, 3K run in 1:40 in the event that attracted more than 300 athletes, making it one of the biggest duathlon races in the country.

The competition is presented by Powerade and organized by Adrenaline Multisport Group headed by Thumbie Remigio.

“I was lagging behind in the run legs but I made up for it during the bike portion.

The Campagnolo 11-speed groupset and shifters installed in my YKK time trial bike made a big difference during the bike race because I have more gears to choose from and the shifting was fast and easy, which resulted in a faster time,” said Maximo.

Maximo, mentored by UCI/ITU certified duathlon coach Patrick Joson, kept his run deficit at a minimum and capitalized during the bike portion to make up for lost time.

“I never thought I can climb the podium on my first duathlon race. The competition was tough with the presence of elite and seasoned athletes. All I was after was to gain experience and exposure since there were no road cycling races in the meantime,” said Maximo.

FAVORITES RULE DURANO TRIATHLON SERIES

Published in Sun Star Newspaper on May 29, 2012 Tuesday issue
by Mike Limpag, Sports Editor
