LORHIZ Echavez and Elmo Clarabal topped the Dayo Brothers triathlon in Catmon, Cebu yesterday.

Echavez ran away with the title in 1:06:21, beating Rochelle Tan (1:20:30) and Loveleinell Casidsid (1:24:47). Rachel Limtong (1:27:44) and Merly Colmenares got the fourth and fifth places, respectively.

Echavez, a veteran swimmer turned triathlete, was also one of the organizers of the event and said she was elated by the turnout of 54 triathletes.

“It was really refreshing as a race organizer and an athlete to see a lot of newbies in the triathlon scene. Definitely, the glory days of triathlon are back. It’s always our nature to venture out of the norm and I guess with the fun runs every weekend, people want something new and exciting,” Echavez said.

She added that she joined the race as part of her training and she was gauging her performance in the bike leg.

“I really need more work on it, especially when it comes to mountain biking,” Echavez said.

Echavez has confirmed she will be joining the Filipino elite category of the Xterra Philippines Triathlon Championship on March 6 in Liloan, Cebu. She will be playing for Blood Red team.
