THE BOOTERS of the University of San Carlos (USC) did not take long to get into form as they defeated the University of Cebu (UC), 4-2, in the collegiate division of the Cesafi football tournament at the USC-Technological Center in Talamban.

USC, last year’s runner-up to the crown and champions in 2006, wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as they scored in the game’s first minute behind a quick strike from Renan Gustilo. 15 minutes later, vaunted striker Kyle Soriano joined the scoring parade with a prolific conversion while Patrick Philip scored in the 34th minute to propel the lead to 3-0 that all but decided the game’s outcome.

UC’s Rodney Gandionco tried to rally their troops with a goal in the 76th minute but USC’s Eldon Ensumo quickly squashed those hopes with another goal six minutes from regulation time. UC’s Julius Jumaoas added a consolation goal in extra time to peg the final tally.

The University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) also scored a 6-0 win over newcomers Cebu Doctor’s University (CDU).

Playing with a depleted lineup did not bring negative effect to the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) booters as they still pulled off a 6-0 demolition of Cebu Doctors’ University in the 2008 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) football tournament at the University of San Carlos-Technological Center in Brgy. Talamban, this city.

Joseph Rodriguez and Rene Sanchez contributed two goals apiece for USPF, Edmar Galacio and John Casayan had one goal each.

Defending champions University of San Jose-Recoletos and Don Bosco Technology Center started their title retention bids in contrasting fashion in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) football event yesterday at the University of San Carlos-Technological Center (USC-TC) field in Brgy. Talamban, this city.

USJ-R, the reigning titlist in the tertiary division, fought to a scoreless draw with the hard-fighting University of the Visayas booters.

Don Bosco, which won the secondary title last season by just a goal difference over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), opened their campaign for back-to-back crowns with a masterful 6-0 drubbing of the USC-North Campus.

Don Bosco logged three goals in the first half and added another three in the second half. Those who scored for Don Bosco were Milo Joseph Limalima, Angelico Ramirez, Andrew Tabar, Ropert Guilon, Frenx Tarongoy, and Peter Ricamora.

USPF is also no course for a grudge rematch with Don Bosco after it annihilated USJ-R, 9-0.

USJ-R simply could not contain USPF’s scoring machines Jephunneh Pelanio and Paolo Lapasaran, who were accounted for a total of five goals.

Pelanio completed a hat-trick at the 12th, 28th and 53rd, while sneaked in goals at the 22nd and 34th.

FORMER Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. champion University of San Carlos proved it is still a force to be reckoned with as it triumphed over the University of Cebu, 4-2, in the opening day of the Cesafi football tournament yesterday at the USC-TC football field.

The USC squad wasted no time on the offensive end as they scored a quick goal from Renan Vincent Gustillo in the first minute for the 1-0 advantage.

At the 16th minute mark Kyle Soriano added another goal for USC as he scored a well timed header that stunned the USC goalkeeper.

Patrick Philip Uno made it 3-0 off another header from a corner kick for a commanding 3-0 lead.

In the second half UC finally hit the net following a strike by Rodney Gandionco from point blank range to cut down the lead, 3-1.

UC was more effective offensively in the second half but their strikers failed to take advantages of their chances and hit the goal post twice.

However, USC’s Eldon Ensomo answered UC’s goal with a long shot near the center of the field in the 84th minute for the comfortable 4-1 advantage before Julius Jumao-as then scored on a header in the waning minutes of the game.

On the other hand, the most awaited match up between the defending champions the University of San Jose-Recoletos and last season’s only undefeated squad University of the Visayas ended in a 0-0 draw.

In the high school division, University of Southern Philippines routed USJ-R, 9-0.

Jephunneh Pelanio led USPF with a hat trick scoring in the 12th, 28th and 53rd minutes, while Paolo Lapasaran added two goals.

13 BARRED IN CESAFI FOOTBALL

DEFENDING champion University of San Jose-Recoletos will face last season’s powerhouse team, the University of the Visayas, in the opening of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) football tournament at the University of San Carlos-Technology Center football field.

On the other hand, the Cesafi Screening Committee has barred 13 football players for the Cesafi football tournament because of academic deficiencies.

Tournament manager Jonathan Maximo told Sun.Star Cebu that he has advised the 13 players from the different schools not to play in the tournament because he believes that the studies of the students are much more important than the games.

Education first

“Cesafi wants to put education first before the games. They were advised not to play for their own good. They have to take care of their studies first before playing football,” said Maximo. “That’s real essence of Cesafi football. It’s beyond the game,” he added.

Meanwhile, today will feature an intense match up of the two best teams of last season. UV finished the season first with three wins, no losses and a draw but was unfortunately disqualified from the tournament after having ineligible players in the squad.

Meanwhile USJ-R finished the elimination round with two victories, a defeat and a draw and defeated 2006 title holders USC, 2-0, in last season’s championships.

Following the most awaited match up will be a game between first runnerup USC against University of Cebu and a match between University of Southern Philippines-Foundation and the Cesafi football newcomer Cebu Doctors University.

Beforehand, there will be quick opening kickoff by Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy and tournament manager and former Cebu Football Association President Jonathan Maximo followed by the high school games of USPF vs. USJ-R at 8 a.m. and a match between Don Bosco Technology Center and USC. (EKA)

The Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) football event kicks off today at the University of San Carlos-Technological Center in Brgy. Talamban,this city.

Before the action could actually take place, 13 players were barred from joining the competition due to academic deficiency.

Tournament manager Jonathan “Maxi” Maximo said they are doing this because CESAFI is conscious of the athletes’ education and not solely on playing football.

Today, defending champion University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) will go up against the University of the Visayas. The other collegiate matchers pits the University of Cebu against University of San Carlos and league newcomer Cebu Doctors’ University opposite the University of Southern Philippines Foundation.

Before the tertiary action, there will be a pair of games in secondary division starting off with the showdown between USPF and USJ-R at 8 am. Afterwhich, Don Bosco will kick off its title retention bid against USC.

Last year, Don Bosco won the crown over USPF by just a goal difference.

The tournament follows a single round robin format, with the top four teams advancing into the crossover semifinals. The survivors will then clash for the championship. – Caecent No-ot Magsumbol

CEBU’s football standouts are ready to get rolling as the Cesafi football tournament finally kicks-off this morning with a quintiple bill at the University of San Carlos (USC) – Technology Center football field in Talamban.

Three games are in the offing in the collegiate ranks today, which will be highlighted by the opening clash between league powerhouse University of the Visayas (UV) and the defending champions University of San Jose – Recoletos (USJ-R) at 11 a.m.

In other matches, the University of Cebu (UC) will duke it out with last year’s runner-up USC at 1 p.m. while newcomers Cebu Doctor’s University (CDU) faces the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) in the last game at 3 p.m.

The tournament will adopt a single round-robbin with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals.

High School defending champions Don Bosco sizes up its title defense when they face the booters of USC in the main game at 9:30 a.m.

USPF will also be seeing action today as they tackle the USJ-R in the curtain-raiser at 8 a.m.

Former Cebu Football Association (CebuFA) president and Cesafi football tournament manager Jonathan “Maxi” Maximo believes the banning of varsity players from competing in the upcoming Aboitiz Cup is a non-issue as this can be easily worked out with proper scheduling.

The Aboitiz Cup is scheduled to start on Sept. 27 while the Cesafi football tournament follows a week after, on October 4, thus the overlapping schedule.

Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy has reiterated the board's decision to keep their players from competing in the Aboitiz Cup to make sure that they are healthy enough to represent their respective schools.

Maximo, who has served as CebuFA president from 2003 until last year, and has handled the Cesafi tournament in 2004, 2005 and 2007, was surprised to know that the issue made headlines these days since the rule was implemented years back although some parties opted to just work around it.

“We cannot blame the Cesafi and their member schools because they provide the players with the education through their scholarships. It would be just prudent to just work around the Cesafi schedule,” said Maximo.

He added that since the Cesafi ruling would only affect some players in the Boys 17 and Men's Open divisions, the Aboitiz Cup organizers can opt to schedule their games in said divisions, after the Cesafi tournament.

Regarding rumors that CebuFA will not permit its referees to officiate the Cesafi games if the Cesafi refuses to change its stand, Maximo believes that will not likely to happen.

“We cannot afford to have any animosity since we need to have more football tournaments. I will sit down with CebuFA to suggest how to avoid conflicts with the Cesafi and others like the City Olympics, PRISAA, Palaro, etc. Also, I will have the Cesafi tournament to be sanctioned by CebuFA as a sign of courtesy. We will tap their referees so that everybody will have a role,” added Maximo.

Also, the CebuFA through its president Richard Montayre has expressed its desire to work with the Cesafi in order to properly coordinate it into its schedule of activities.

“All football activities must be sanctioned by the provincial association to properly promote the sport and develop better relations with the different organizing bodies involving football and the provincial football association. We are requesting your good office for the possibility of working hand in hand with the Cebu FA in the organization of the different football competitions, which are organized by your office. This will ensure that such football activities will be included in the yearly calendar of the football association and this will also prevent overlapping of schedules. Furthermore, your football activities will have proper sanctioning and monitoring so that if needed, disciplinary measures will be given and stipulated by its bylaws,” said Montayre in a letter sent to the Cesafi office.

PROHIBITION of Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) athletes to join other tournaments will be strictly implemented this year by its President Felix Tiukinhoy and not a single Cesafi athlete is exempted from this rule, including the football players.

“I made it clear with the football coaches in our last meeting that since it’s Cesafi season there no varsity player can play in any other tournament when the Cesafi tournament is still ongoing,” Tiukinhoy told Sun.Star Cebu.

“They can join other tournaments after the season ends,” he added.

Due to this rule, a lot of football teams may be absent in what would be the biggest football event in the Cebuano football scene for this year—the revitalized Aboitiz Cup set later this month.

Members

The football teams that can miss out on the Aboitiz Cup are the University of San Jose-Recoletos, University of San Carlos, University of Southern Philippines-Foundation, University of Cebu, University of the Visayas and Don Bosco College because all of these teams are members of the Cesafi.

According to Tiukinhoy any Cesafi player caught playing in other tournaments will barred from the Cesafi tournament for the rest of the season.

Earlier in the Cesafi season Tiukinhoy banned five Southwestern University basketball players after being caught playing in a tournament aside from Cesafi.

Schedule

Meanwhile, the schedule of the Cesafi football games are still uncertain but Tiukinhoy assured that the games will start a soon as possible after Tournament Director and former Cebu Football Association president Jonathan Maximo secures the venue, which will still be at the USC-TC football grounds.

“We are just waiting for the commitment of the venue. Once we get the venue then the schedules will be ready,” said Tiukinhoy. (EKA)
