AFTER a decent finish in the fourth leg of the Tour of Clark last month, 15-year-old junior cyclist Luis Miguel "Igi" Maximo of Springdale and Oz Racing will be joining the MTB Individual Time Trial (ITT) of the Level Up Your Crank: MTB ITT today.

The event will start at the Outpost in Lahug and will end up at Willy's Store near Chateau de Busay.

"I decided to join the MTB race this time to explore the other cycling disciplines aside from my usual road bike races.

I also want to meet new friends in the MTB group. What I observed is that the mountainbikers are much younger than the road bikers. I think this is going to be fun," Maximo said in an e-mail to Sun.Star Cebu.

He will be joining more than 30 participants in the event, which will have the executive A, executive B, beginner, and women's division.

It is organized by Cebu Cycling's Paul Baguio.

"I will let the organizer decide on my category, whether I should be in the beginner or not. Surprisingly, they put me in the executive A category, the toughest group, in spite of my age. But it's OK with me, I'm not expecting to win because I still lack experience in mountainbike racing," Maximo said.

DURING a thanksgiving dinner the Cesafi threw for the media last year, I got to talk with commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy about lots of stuffs, some even about the coming May 10, 2010 election.

All those, of course, were off the record and some of the sports-related stuff, too.

But what I do remember distinctly in that gathering was Commissioner Tiukinhoy didn’t know the football event was already over.

“Naa na diay champion?”

That was after I told the commissioner of the “slight problem” the media had with getting in touch with the tournament director for football.

It turned out the Commish was having the same problem too.

Just this week he announced there’s a new tournament manager for my favorite sport.

“We could barely contact our tournament manager and we had no idea how the games (were going) because it was so hard to get the results.”

So last year’s manager is gone. Sadly, he was tapped because he was from the CFA, hence Cesafi expected a smooth event—no conflict of schedules, no haggling on the sanctions fees etc. There were really no conflicts, yes, but it seemed, there was also no event because nobody heard anything.

The Commish is trying to tap Jonathan Maximo, the other year’s tournament director and he said he’s still thinking about it.

I hope Maxi, though he’s busy playing as a one-man support crew and coach to his son’s budding cycling career, will accept the job.

I heard, too, that one club is trying to convince Maxi to take the job and they’ll put the club’s resources to make sure the event will be succesfull.

Now wouldn’t that be something?

Cesafi football might just give basketball a run for their money, this year.

MAXIMO FINISHES 4TH IN ITT OF LEVEL UP M'BIKE RACE

JUNIOR cyclist Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo finished in fourth place in the open/elite class Executive A class of the Individual Time Trial (ITT) of the Level Up Your Crank Mountainbike Race yesterday at the Busay Hills in Lahug.

Maximo was the youngest racer in the grizzled veteran field and finished the race in 19 minutes and 29 seconds, three minutes behind the eventual champion Grayson Senador, who finished with a time of 16 minutes and 22 seconds. Bal Valdehueza placed second, five seconds behind the winner while in third was Jason Dorado with a time of 19 minutes and 12 seconds.

“I’m delighted I made it into a podium finish bisan didto ko nabutang sa toughest group (Exec A). Just as I said before the race I was not expecting a top 5 win because I’m not used to a mountainbike,” said Maximo after the race.

In other categories, Daryl Cubar won the Executive B with a time of 16 minutes and 15 seconds, Robert Sabello took home the championship in the 26 Beginners class after crossing the finish line with a time of 18 minutes and 10 seconds.

Ryan Lucero won the 29 Executve/Beginners with a time of 21 minutes and 1 second while finally, Christie Dagatan reigned supreme in the women's category with a time of 23 minutes and 55 seconds.

Maximo will be competing today in the Danao-Sogod-Danao Road Race, using a road bike this time. The distance will be 70 kilometers. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio

Tiukinhoy said he has already talked to Cebu Volleyball Association (CEVA) president Jun San Juan and former Cebu Football Association head Jonathan “Maxi” Maximo to run the respective events this year and he got positive feedbacks from them.

“I will be talking again to San Juan to discuss with him some matters in order to have a smooth sailing volleyball tournament this year and also with the appointment of the new tournament manager,” said Tiukinhoy.

“We had an initial conversation with Maximo and so far, he’s okay with it. He just have to finalize everything including his schedule before he confirms,” added Tiukinhoy.

UAAP TO JOIN ASEAN UNIVERSITY GAMES

GMA News.  Team UAAP will represent the Philippines in the coming 15th ASEAN University Games slated December 12-23 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

This was confirmed by Em Fernandez of Ateneo de Manila, secretary general of the UAAP’s 73rd season.

“We will field in entries in taekwondo, swimming, track and field and hopefully, basketball," said Fernandez.

A total of 18 sports disciplines will be contested in the biennial regional university meet, which include athletics, badminton, basketball, beach and indoor volleyball, cricket, football, golf, karatedo, taekwondo, swimming, table tennis and lawn tennis.

During the 14th edition of the meet in 2008, Team UAAP-Philippines bagged eight gold, 12 silver and 21 bronze medals from taekwondo, swimming and athletics, to finish sixth overall.

The taekwondo jins led the team’s medal haul with former Olympian Mary Antoinette Rivero of De La Salle University atoning for four gold, four silver and six bronze medals.

Other countries participating in the meet are defending overall champion Malaysia, host Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei Darrusalam, Laos and Cambodia.

The ASEAN University Games will be the first major international multi-event meet to be hosted by Chiang Mai since the 18th Southeast Asian Games held in 1995. - RCJ, GMANews.TV

CESAFI TO TAP NEW MANAGERS FOR FOOTBALL, VOLLEYBALL

IN ITS desire to have a smooth staging of its 10th season, the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) is revamping the list of its tournament managers in all the league’s events this year.

Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy said they have decided to change the managers of two events.

“We will have different tournament directors for volleyball and football,” said Tiukinhoy.

Tiukinhoy said he will be talking to Cebu Volleyball Association president Jun San Juan and to former Cebu Football Association head Jonathan Maximo to run their events this year.

Cesafi had always wanted to tap Ceva for their volleyball competitions but both organizations seem to disagree on the fees for the officials. Last year, the volleyball competition was also the most controversial event and had three coaches banned from the Cesafi for life.

That incident has forced Cesafi to rethink working with Ceva again.

“We already had initial talks with San Juan. I will be talking to him and Maximo this week to finalize everything,” said Tiukinhoy.

In football, Tiukinhoy said he wants to tap the services of Maximo, because he wasn’t satisfied with how the event was run last year.

“We had a hard time last year because we could barely contact our tournament manager and we had no idea how the games were going.

It was so hard to get the results. Maximo was very efficient as an organizer so we hope he agrees to help us out again this year,” said Tiukinhoy.

This week, Tiukinhoy will also meet with choreographers, school representatives and the marketing arm of the tournament to discuss the opening of the Cesafi season set at the end of the month.

“We hired the services of a marketing arm to take care of this. We want to make it special because it is our 10th year,” Tiukinhoy said.

MAXIMO WINS GOLD IN CIRCUIT RACE OF THE TOUR OF CLARK'S SECOND STAGE

Cebuano junior cyclist Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo bounced back in a huge way from his loss in the individual time trial (ITT) event by taking the gold medal in the Stage 2 Circuit Race of the Tour of Clark—the fourth leg of the Philippine Premier Cycling League (PPCL)—at the Clark Freeport Zone in Angeles City, Pampanga.

Maximo, a 15 year old student of the PAREF Springdale, placed second in ITT event last weekend but used the memory of that disppointing loss and with additional rest, claimed the prestigious title in the 25 kilometer race. Manila riders Gino Ongkiatco and Allen Santiago finished in second and third place, respectively.

A circuit race utilizes a relatively straight route normally done in a highway road. Its start and finish lines lie in the same area.

After struggling to find his second wind in the ITT race due to lack of sleep, Maximo got some much needed rest and the results immediately showed as he paced himself and kept within the pack before surprising the rest of his competitors by exploding away and sprinting his way to the finish line.

According to team manager and father, Jonathan Maximo, the strategy was to conserve as much energy possible and hide behind the group during the actual race to reduce air drag and go for a very quick sprint in the last few meters from the finish line.

The race started unusually slow with cyclists observing each other. Maximo kept his cool and ably followed the race strategy to the letter, and just stayed behind the group. There were some few break-aways from the other cyclists but they were eventually brought back in the main group. But the finale of the race belonged to Maximo as he broke away from the pack with just 50 meters left in the race.

An ecstatic Maximo commented that he was happy to bounce back from the previous loss. “Very happy. I know I can bounce back from this race. I was just groggy in the ITT race due to lack of sleep that’s why I didn’t perform well this morning,” he said.

 

The next event will be the Road Race, a grueling 26 km race around the roads inside the Clark Freeport Zone.

CEBUANO Luis “Igi” Maximo ended his bid in the fourth leg of the Philippine Premiere Cycling series Tour of Clark with a second-place finish in the final stage Sunday at the Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga.

Maximo lost to Dagupan City’s Rudolfo Carolino. Taking third place was Manila’s Allen Santiago.

The 15-year-old cyclist also finished second in the individual time trial and made up for it by winning the second stage, which was the circuit race.

Maximo finished the three-day event by having the best combined finish of anyone from the junior, men and women’s divisions.

“I was the only Cebuano and I feel so proud bringing the hope of my hometown and winning some titles along the way. If given another chance, I am willing to do it again,” Maximo said in an e-mail to Sun.Star Cebu.

He said he realized how hard a multi-stage race is and how important endurance and recovery are to get ready for the next stage.

“In the Tour de France (TdF), which is a 21-stage event spread in three weeks, cyclists get to win only a few stages but the most consistent gets the title. Now that I have experienced how difficult it is in a multi-stage road racing, I can now say that what Lance Armstrong did winning seven straight titles was amazing,” Maximo said.
