THE youngest member of the Philippine Cycling team, Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo, is off to his first race of the year in the 10th Tour ni Frank this weekend.

The race, organized by Fil-Am Frank Gatdula, will be always be remembered by the junior cyclist as it was his first race experience since he joined cycling back in 2010.

"This is a sentimental race for me," said Maximo.

He started at the age 14 and was discovered then. He was the youngest participant in the event but finished ninth overall in the Category C Open Age.

He had an improved finish last year, having placed fifth in the same category.

"My target this time is to be in the top three. My only regret is that this event falls on the same date with the Cebu City Marathon. Running is my other sport and I would have wanted to run the CCM again," said Maximo.

Riders from Manila, Leyte, Bohol and other parts of Visayas and Mindanao have signed up for the Categories B and C in the Open Age.

The two-day series will have two stages, the criterium race and climbing road bike race in Mandaue Reclamation Area and Transcentral Highway.

Maximo was supposed to fly to Manila this weekend for training but begged off to participate in the Tour ni Frank.

Slated to compete in this race is newly named Philippine team member Luis Miguel "Igi" Maximo, who will be back in the race that basically started his career in 2010.

"My target this time is a Top 3 finish," said Maximo.

Duha pa lang ka tuig ang nilabay sukad siya mibalhin og hilig gikan sa football ngadto sa cycling, si Igimax mihipos na og daghang dungog sa maong paugnat sa kusog.

Sixteen year-old Cebuano junior cyclist Luis Miguel "Igi" Maximo achieved a long-standing dream of his as he was named to the Philippine cycling team, becoming its youngest member and the only junior cyclist from the Visayas and Mindanao.

PhilCycling, the UCI-recognized National Sports Association of cycling in the country headed by Mayor Abraham Tolentino, conducted two nationwide qualifying rounds for the National Junior Trials.

In the Tour of Clark last Nov. 26-27 in Clark, Pampanga, which served as the preliminary round for Juniors 16-17, Maximo finished in second place in the Individual Time Trial (ITT) 10km and third overall in the General Classification standings.

In the Tagaytay Trials last Dec. 12, in spite of travel fatigue and pressure from school commitments, he delivered a sixth place finish in the Individual Time Trial (ITT) 30km among the 22 aspiring cyclists.

"I did not expect it will come this soon.  I was up against older riders during the Trials, all I wished for was a slot in the national training pool," said Maximo.

"Cyclists from Pangasinan and Central Luzon - known hotbeds of cycling in the country - were strong.  The top-of-the-line cycling racing equipment provided by Cebu-based YKK Trading really made the big difference in the race," added Maximo.

As part of the Philippine National Junior Team, Maximo is now in the shortlist for inclusion into the country's participation in the 2012 Asian Juniors Cycling Championships this coming Feb. 8 to 18 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

CEBU, Philippines - Decorated Cebuano junior cyclist Luis Miguel “Igimax” Maximo reached another milestone in his budding career after he became the youngest member of the Philippine Cycling Team.

Maximo may have been out in the top three list during the final tryout in Tagaytay City last month, but his overall performance in the national scene and his potential in the sport paved the way for his inclusion in the PHL squad.

"I did not expect it will come this soon. I was up against older riders during the trials. All I wished for was a slot in the national training pool," said the president of PAREF-Springdale Student Council.

Only two years since shifting from football to cycling, Igimax has already reaped several honors in the said sport.

Maximo's great determination to improve his skills has also opened the door for several companies to support him in his campaign in national events.

PhilCycling, the UCI-recognized National Sports Association (NSA) of cycling in the country headed by Mayor Abraham Tolentino, conducted two nationwide qualifying rounds for the National Junior Trials.

In the Tour of Clark last November 26-27 in Clark, Pampanga which served as the preliminary round for juniors 16-17, Igimax grabbed second place in the Individual Time Trial (ITT) covering10 kilometers and third place overall in the general classification.

During the final tryout in Tagaytay, Maximo placed sixth in the ITT among the 22 aspirants, thanks to the time trial bike designed by fellow Cebuano James Montecillo of YKK Trading.

"Cyclists from Pangasinan and Central Luzon, known hotbeds of cycling in the country, were strong. The top of the line cycling racing equipment provided by Cebu-based YKK Trading really made the big difference in the race," added Igimax.

YKK Trading's support for Igimax has resulted in securing equipment partnerships abroad with Ridley frames (Belgium), Campagnolo groupset (Italy), Token wheels (Asia), FSA cranks (US), Vision tri bars (US), Santini apparels (Italy), Lazer helmets (Belgium), Fizik saddles (Italy), Carnac shoes (France), Kenda tires (Asia) and Challenge tires (Italy).

Now that he is part of the national team, Igimax is now in the shortlist for inclusion into the country's participation in the 2012 Asian Juniors Cycling Championships on February 8-18 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He is expected to report for a training camp in Tagaytay City.

"Being part of the national team is something to cherish for. Wherever this will lead me to, I will always race for my hometown Cebu," assured Igimax. - (THE FREEMAN)

CEBUANO cyclist Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo fulfilled a dream when he made it to the PHL cycling team and qualified for an Asian competition set next month.

The 16-year-old 7-time Athlete of the Year of Paref-Springdale is the youngest member of the national team and the only junior cyclist from the South.

"Being part of the national team is something to cherish. Wherever this will lead me, I will always race for my hometown Cebu," said Maximo in an e-mail message.

With his inclusion in the Philippine Junior Team last December, Maximo is now part of the delegation that will compete in the 2012 Asian Juniors Cycling Championships this Feb. 8-18 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

He will be in Tagaytay City this month for a training camp with other four junior cyclists under PhilCycling in preparation for the international race.

Maximo got the attention of the national team officials following his performances in two national qualifying races.

In the Tour of Clark in Pampanga last November, Maximo placed second in the Individual Time Trial (ITT) 10K and third place overall in the General Classification standings for the juniors division.

In the Tagaytay Trials last Dec. 12, he finished sixth in the ITT 30K among 22 cyclists despite travel fatigue and pressure from school commitments.

These races, organized by PhilCycling, were held as the national junior team trials.

Among the races he joined prior to the national trials were the Cebu Cycling Criterium, where he placed second in the open age, the Mabitac Classic in Rizal, where he finished 12th in the Junior 20 and the Ormoc City Medical Society Bike Tour, where he placed second in the Junior 19 division.

YAHOO: 5 BEST BUSINESSES TO GET IN FOR 2012

1. Elder Care
With the aid of groundbreaking medical treatments and technology, Americans are living longer, and many seniors are living independently well into their golden years but with a little less mobility. The need for varying amounts of help with daily tasks such as cooking, cleaning, taking medication and basic personal care is leading to exponential growth in the elder care industry. Businesses and franchises are popping up.

The need for senior care services and products will become even more pressing in years to come. Not only are baby boomers' parents living longer; as they age into their own sunset years, they too will need these services. And this group has money to spend.

Home care is in growing demand as more families seek "higher-quality, more-affordable care in the home when they need it as an alternative to moving to facilities that can be much more expensive," says BrightStar Care CEO and founder Shelly Sun.

BrightStar provides companionship, personal care and nursing home care services to people of all ages. The 10-year-old company, which has more than 250 franchises, also provides supplemental staff to health care facilities and doctor's offices.

2. Health and Wellness
The trend toward a healthy lifestyle is producing ample opportunity for businesses from frozen yogurt franchises to create-your-own-salad eateries to fitness centers to benefits consultants.

Consumers are looking more closely at where their food is sourced on their own, for instance, but with the escalating costs of insurance companies are simultaneously encouraging employees to become more healthy.

So-called wellness plans are growing in the workplace as more companies expand what they offer to employees, from a gym discount to a more in-depth health incentive package, including stress management and work/life balance education, according to CBIZ Benefits & Insurance, an employee benefits consultant that helps small businesses implement wellness programs... MAXIMO VOWS TO HELP PROMOTE CYCLING IN CEBU

Published in The Freeman Newspaper on December 30, 2011 Friday issue
by Caecent Noot Magsumbol, Staff Writer
Manny Villaruel, Sports Editor

CEBU, Philippines - Award-winning Cebuano sportsman Jonathan “Maxi” Maximo has stepped up his effort for the development of cycling in Cebu.

Maximo said he is willing to help the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) in putting cycling in the mainstream of its programs for next year.

During their initial discussion with CCSC officials, the South Road Properties (SRP) is being eyed as cycling hub, particularly at the SRP access road near Pond A beside the creek that passes under the bridge all the way to Sugbu Center.

“This is a very ideal place for cycling for we can have control of the road from vehicles and pedestrians,” said Maximo in a CCSC executive director Brando Velasquez yesterday.

Maximo and his group is set to survey the area within the week.

In light of this, Maximo is requesting the CCSC to coordinate with the SRP management so they could get access of the road all the way to Sugbo Center.

Should everything turn out well, SRP will serve as the main venue for different cycling events in the future as well as training ground for Cebuano cyclists (FREEMAN)

Rico Navarro: I pray that the sports industry be united to push Cebu as the country’s sports capital. This covers a lot of ground from: all sports stakeholders to have the same mindset; competent hosting of events; having the most competitive athletes in all events; and having all sports/events/local NSA’s taking a united stand for all their activities.

Al Mendoza: For Pres. Noynoy to chase the masterminds of the illegal loggers that triggered deaths at the height of Sendong’s fury up to the ends of the earth. For the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight not to push through. For me to visit Liverpool, England, the birthplace of The Beatles.

Igi Maximo. To represent Cebu and race for my country in the 2012 Asian Junior Cycling Championships in Malaysia and the World Juniors in Netherlands. To be an example to the youth that being a student-elite athlete is possible. That schools would support cycling and include it in their varsity program.

Graeme Mackinnon: 1) That the AZKALS vs. CF Madrid, DILI KAMO NAG-IISA game at Rizal on Jan. 7 be a success in raising funds for the victims of Sendong. 2) That the 2012 Olympics be controversy-free and be a TV fans paradise. 3) That GLOBAL FC will take out the UFL League in Manila.

Mike Limpag: Another semis stint or two for the Azkals in the Challenge Cup and Suzuki Cup, another slam or two for Maria Sharapova, and I hope to run a couple of 21Ks and my first marathon.

Brian Lim: 1) Sports Tourism in Cebu to grow--emerging sports such as rugby, flag football, airsoft, electronic sports, mixed martial arts, water sports. 2) Get a multipurpose field built - For emerging sports to practice along with traditional sports. 3) To carry out the Great Cebu Sports Festival.. drawing attention to Cebu as a sporting destination.

Jean Henri Lhuillier: Wishing the best for the Philippine Tennis Academy and that these players play to the best of their ability... to the success of the Davis Cup team. Wishing that the Cebuana Gems win the 2nd season of the PBA D-league.

Yong Larrazabal: 1) That Filipinos would love the Philippines even more by stopping illegal logging, illegal poaching of its wildlife and destroying/wasting our natural resources. 2) That Cebu would regain its spot as the no.1 city in terms of quality of life, sports and medical tourism. 3) That only one run be allowed every Sunday in Cebu so as to build a strong camaraderie among runners and not to induce divisiveness.

Noy Jopson: Cobra Ironman 70.3 offering Kona slots again. My wifey Amale improving at least 18 seconds on her 3:46.17 Marathon PR and qualifying for Boston. Our new The Brick Multi-Sport Store at the J Center Mall fulfilling the needs of the Cebu Triathlon community.

Samsam Gullas: Filipino unity. Fighting together, not against each other for one common goal. Everyone will do their part to help out in the recent flooding in Cagayan, Iligan and Dumaguete. Pacquiao fights Floyd and knocks Floyd out. Double championship for UV basketball.

Guy Concepcion: That Lance Armstrong joins the XTERRA Phils. in Liloan. That all participants have a good andsafe race in XTERRA and Ironman 70.3 Phils.

Jack Biantan: Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight to push through. More success for the Azkals. Gold medal finish for the Phils. in the London Games.

Jesse Bernad: That leadership in the Philippine Amateur Baseball Association be resolved so that baseball can move on with newer programs. That local leaders continue to support baseball and softball with tournaments and provide an adequate playing field. That Cebu send the best team to the 2012 Little League baseball and softball Philippine Series.

Ricky Ballesteros: To finish the newly-refurbished track oval before March. Cebu Sports Museum and Hall Fame to complement the Cebu City Sports Center. Host the Palarong Pambansa or any international competition.

Michael Aldeguer: 1) For all the Filipinos to unite for the good of our country. 2) Philippine Boxing to bring more pride and joy to the Filipinos all over the world. 3) AJ Banal and Milan Melindo to fight for World titles as both are WBO rated No. 1 and No. 2.

LIMPAG: WISHES FOR 2012

Sun Star Cebu.  Aside from running, another sport on the rise in Cebu City is cycling and like running, the boom can’t be attributed to one group or one person. It seems guys and girls just decided to buy their bikes and take up the sport.

And I only have two wishes for cycling—that they don’t go the way of cycling in the Philippines, where politics is so toxic that development has stagnated and I hope the groups can band together to organize the Metro Cebu championships. Let’s set the bar for the others to follow, shall we?... Read more

CEBU, Philippines - Organizers of the 10th edition of the Cebu RECYCLE Cycling Series popularly known as the Tour Ni Frank set January 7 and 8 decided to change the route to toughen it.

The reason for the decision is to make it worth the while of those who traveled far just to make it to the event.

What has been changed is the second stage on January 8, which was originally announced to be race to the southern part of Cebu.

Frank Gatdula, the man behind the event, bared the change to The F .

Registration fee for the event is only P200 and this is only for category B and C cyclists.

Trophies, medals and cash prizes await the top performers of the event.

Riders, who will not make it to the podium, however, still have a chance to bring home something with lots of items to be raffled off courtesy of the sponsors like Atty. Jong Sepulveda, Vellum Cycles, Raldy Vios Construction, OZ Racing, Pocari Sweat, Nagashima, Kia Motors, Habagat, Zyke Shirts, BBC Print, ReCycle, and LUZVIMIN (USA) Racing. – (FREEMAN)
