THE Central Visayas Private School Athletic Association (Prisaa) athletes struggled for a gold medal that never came as the closing of the 2008 National Prisaa draws nearer to Monday in Zamboanga City.

Prisaa-7 Men’s and Women’s chess team failed to bring the gold medal in the team event as they finished only second to the Western Visayas chess squad in both Men’s and distaff side.

Prisaa-6 earned a perfect 15.0 in both categories to bag the gold medal. Prisaa-7 Men’s team earned 13.5, while the women’s squad accumulated 14.0 points. Davao Prisaa (Prisaa-11) got the bronze in the men’s division with 12.5, while NCR copped the bronze in the women’s side with 12.0 points.

However, Prisaa-7 scored gold medals in special awards in chess. University of San Carlos’ Angelie Giangan earned the gold medal for Board 1 and Marefe Serentas was the golden girl at Board 4.

Not even Cebu’s best hope for gold medal, the Dancesports athletes, could parlay the medal standings after they failed to bag the gold medal.

However, as consolation, University of Cebu’s (UC) Jed Mahusay and Princes Lawrence Inocando bagged the silver medal in the Rumba category and the bronze medal in the overall Latin contest.

Shelbert Fariñas and Barbie Vallente of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), on the other hand, won the bronze medal in the Jive category.

Hopes

Prisaa-7 is now pinning their hopes on the ball games to boost their medal tally for the rest of the competition.

According to UC Athletic Director Bernard Ricablanca, Prisaa-7’s hope to stay hold of the second place, which they are holding precariously over Prisaa-6, lies on the performance of the team events.

Defending champion Men’s Basketball team still had high hopes of reclaiming the gold medal in basketball.

Powerhouse National Capital Region is the virtual champions of the competition after collecting 73 gold medals as of Friday.

In football, Region 6 overpowered the USJ-R-manned Central Visayas team, scoring two goals a piece in the first and second half.

Coach Bono believed that his team had an off night and their opponent was much more prepared entering the game.

Central Visayas will play for third place against Davao today.

Table tennis

After winning four golds in the Men’s team event last Thursday and the finals appearance of the men’s doubles, courtesy of Glendo Nayre and Jay Erebert Impuesto, the table tennis men’s singles will try to accumulate more gold for the region in today’s finals match-up.

Three-time National Prisaa Most Valuable Player Michael Motel of UC will be up against Danilo Barios from Region 6 in their finals showdown today at 8:30 a.m. at the Pilar College Gym in Zamboanga City.

On his way to the finals, Motel easily won against the player from Region 1 in their semifinals game, 3-0, and also blanked Region 11 in the quarterfinals match, 3-0.

After breezing through the matches yesterday, Motel was reminded by Honoridez to take this game seriously and not to give his opponent a chance to steal the game from him since this is for the gold medal round.

On the other hand, Nayre and Impuesto will also battle for the gold medals today against Region 12, Honoridez said. (RCM/EKA/NSM)

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Dumaguete’s Zoe Menguito handed Central Visayas its best output so far, winning a silver medal at the start of the swimming competition in the 2008 Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) National Games yesterday at the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex here.

Menguito placed second in the 200mr butterfly event, while teammate Gwencent Canada grabbed a bronze in the 50m breastroke. The region’s 4 x 50m medley relay squad also turned over a bronze.

Over at the rubberized track oval, another Cebuano bet failed to meet expectations as Palarong Pambansa record-holder Jefferson Quirubin settled only for bronze in discus throw.

It was the fourth bronze won by ther Cevees after Angela Lado in shot put, Anselmo Esgana in long jump, and Jason Dumaran in high jump.

Mendel Lopez and Eugene Delposo, two of Cebu’s top road runners, missed their marks in the 5,000m run. Lopez landed only at sixth place followed by Delposo at eighth.

Central Visayas performed well though in other disciplines, with its men’s volleyball squad cruising to its third straight win in as many games. The University of San Carlos (USC)-powered Region 7 spikers slammed Region XII, 25-14, 25-13, 26-24, and then fended off Western Visayas (Region 8) in a four-set thriller, 25-23, 25-20, 19-25, 25-23.

Its women’s courtpart, manned mostly by players from the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), also went 2-0 with Region V as its latest vistim with the scores of 26-24, 23-25, 25-10, 25-21.

In basketball, defending champion PRISAA-VII, still playing sans reigning MVP Niño Ramirez, logged its second straight victory at the expense of host Zamboanga, 77-72, while in football, the Cebuano booters blanked Bicol, 7-0, before fighting to a 1-1 draw with the hard-fighting Zamboangeños.

THE University of San Jose-Recoletos opened its campaign on a strong note with a 7-0 rout of Bicol in the Private Schools Athletic Association meet in Zamboanga City yesterday.

Adrianne Mejaran led the strong start with a hat trick while Paul Niño dela Victoria scored two goals for the Jaguars, who are the reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Association champion. Marvin Abelgas and Earl Yagao also added one goal apiece. The Jaguars stifling defense also limited the offensive options for Bicol as the Cebuanos kept a clean slate in its opener.

USJ-R, representing Prisaa 7, will face the dangerous home team Zamboanga City today.

Coach Joselito Bono of Central Visayas believes that Zamboanga is a force to reckon with because they have been playing for so many years together. The team is also outstanding in defense and has strong wingers and midfielders.

“If we give a hundred percent we can win this,” said Coach Bono in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
