CEBU, Philippines - Lito Pastedio ruled the latest edition of the Cebu Cycling Weekly Race the other day at the Mandaue City reclamation area.

Pastedio outlasted a bunch of young and veteran pedal-pushers to dominate class C covering a total of 36 kilometers.

Tata Sy grabbed the second place honors followed by Calixto Cruz.

Danny Simbajon landed fourth, while former RP mountainbiker Nanie Perez grabbed the fifth spot.

The latest talk-of-the-town, Paref-Springdale’s Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo, also saw action and came out the youngest participant at 14 years old.

Maximo could have done better, but having lack of sleep a night before the latest criterium caused him to slow down.

The young cyclist had a late night football game prior to the race. Interestingly, Igi sank the game-clinching goal in Springdale's 1-0 win over Bright Academy in the 14-under division of the 7th Thirsty Cup football tournament at the Cebu City Sports Center. – Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (THE FREEMAN)

Poywo, on the other hand, checked in at 3:16:48 to rule the distaff side. Another Kenyan, Susan Chemutai, finished second at 3:19:52.

For finishing second and third place, respectively, Elmer won P40,000 and Crisenciano, the 2005 and 2007 Milo marathon champion and Southeast Asian Games veteran, received P20,000.

Brothers Ton and Patrick Concepcion awarded the prizes to the winners in the P300,000 event.

Eric Panique ruled the men’s 21k with 1:12.53, beating Alquin Bolivar and Alley Quisay while Maricel Maquilan won the women's event in 1:30.59 with Nhea Ann Barcena and Jacqueline Rohback coming in second and third, respectively.

CEBU, Philippines - Promising Cebuano pedal-pusher Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo has been invited to defend his junior division title in the criterium competition when the 2010 Philippine Premiere Cycling League unfolds its second leg on February 21 at Nuvali in Sta. Rosa.

Maximo is aching to defend his throne but he will seek first the permission of his school, Springdale, to compete in Manila again. Just like Springdale’s support to its student-athletes, the same is expected by the supporters of Igi.

Maximo, a football player turned cyclist, made an impressive debut in the PPCL staged at the Aseana Complex along Macapagal Boulevard in Manila over the weekend.

Maximo scored an upset over RP junior triathlete Allen Santiago to clinch the top spot in the juniors division of the criterium race. He then saw action in the individual time trial and team time trial against older and seasoned racers.

Against the big guys, the 14-year-old Maximo posted 33 minutes and 29 seconds in a 17-kilometer ITT battle even if he was not using a trial bike.

Winning the gold in the junior criterium came as a surprise to award-winning sportsman Jonathan “Maxi” Maximo, father of Igi, as he just want his son to have a memorable finish in his first out-of-town race.

While waiting for the go signal from his school, Igi will continue to challenge the veteran riders of Cebu both in the racer and mountainbike action as well as play football for Springdale where he remains the team captain. – Caecent No-ot Magsumbol . (FREEMAN NEWS)

Maximo, who traded his football cleats for a road bike, won his first race in Manila--the prestigious Philippine Premiere Cycling League Juniors Division.

The 14-year-old Maximo, who joined the Tour ni Frank and the criterium races at the Mandaue Reclamation Area, defeated Allen Santiago for the title, while Joel Famacion and Kenneth Balunsay finished third and fourth, respectively.

Igi is the son of former Cebu Football Association president Jonathan Maximo.

He finished the 13-kilometer route in 21 minutes and 41.67 seconds.

His father said they were not expecting to win since their goal of joining the race was just to gain experience.

However, Igi managed to stay with Santiago whenever he tried to break away and the Cebuano managed to hold a break away of his own in the final stretch.

“The win was just a bonus. He (Igi) met new friends. RP Junior team member John Mier was there to give tips. Ex-RP champ Rolando Pagnanawaon, another Cebuano, was there too. Cebu team spirit was really there,” Maximo said in a text message to Sun.Star Cebu.

YOUNG Cebuano cyclist Igi Maximo made a name for himself in the national racing scene as he won the championship in the juniors division of the Philippine Premier Cycling League yesterday at the Macapagal Avenue in ParaƱaque City.

The 14-year old Maximo, originally a football player in the time of his father's presidency in the Cebu Football Association (CebuFA), is now blazing a trail in the cycling scene, winning the 13-kilometer race with a time of 21 minutes and 41.67 seconds.

He upset Allen Santiago, a former RP team member of the Jr. Triathlon squad, who just arrived from Japan for an international event. In third was Joel Famacion while Kenneth Balunsay finished in fourth place. Finishing in fifth was John Duenas.

It was a cat-and-mouse race between Maximo and Santiago with the latter attempting several breakaways all throughout the race.

Maximo, though, remained in close pursuit until the end, where he staged his own breakaway, to which Santiago was not able to keep up with. /CORRESPONDENT JONAS PANERIO

Day 2 Toledo-Cebu City via the Transcentral Highway

I always had this mistaken notion that all highways are wide and flat, but not until I rode the TCH, which has the profile of a buzz saw.

At just over 90kg, my chance of getting a top 20 was nil. In fact, finishing the race was my main goal. I’ve crossed the TCH 6 times, twice during a race. In last year’s race, fatigue and poor form made me stop, the only time I didn’t finish.

From the start in Toledo to the easier slopes in Balamban, I paced the group, thinking that I’d get a nice workout before stopping. As the climb started, I realized that not everybody passed me by. And when the road really steepened, I unsaddled and walked. The funny thing was, I only realized that I can go faster when I walked. After the race, my friendly rival, Jong Sepulveda, who I dropped earlier but later passed and then dropped me, on foot, no less, confirmed my observation by saying that walking saved his legs for the bike part!

The nice thing about the TCH, if you’re going to eastward, is that it gets “easier” near the end. Of course, “easier” is relative for the unprepared. I passed by a few cyclists from Manila who had inadequate gearing, suffering the climb. “!@#% ito!”, one said.

For me, the TCH is not about racing with other cyclists, it’s about discovering your inner self. It’s a metaphor of life. It’s about the pain and suffering and realizing that you can overcome if you prepare for it.

I know I didn’t suffer alone. Dondie Azarcon, the winner of the previous day’s crit race, rode to a crawl because of cramps. Toshio Nagashima, our friend from Japan, also suffered. Larry Stahlman finished high in the rankings because he was prepared, his gearing was for climbing Everest! Igi Maximo, a 14-yo neophyte, wasn’t unnerved by the peloton and the competition and finished well in his 4th race, which is phenomenal! I knew Brett Harrington wasn’t a climber but this tough Aussie can descend like a stone. I didn’t know that Dr. Wency Rich, an anesthesiologist from Maasin, can climb and suffer at the same time!

I’m sure every cyclist had their own personal story of pain and suffering. And I hope they’ll be back next year. Which reminded me of Theo de Rooij, a Dutch pro cyclist who finished the grueling 260km race (50Km of cobbles!) back in 1985. he said, “It’s a bollocks, this race! You’re working like an animal, you don’t have time to piss, you wet your pants. You’re riding in mud like this, you’re slipping ... it’s a pile of shit.” When then asked if he would start the race again, de Rooij replied: “Sure, it’s the most beautiful race in the world!

The TnF may not be the best race in the world, but in my mind, the TCH makes it the most beautiful. I’ll be back!...

IGI MAXIMO AIMS TO MAKE A MARK IN CYCLING WORLD

CEBU, Philippines - He’s only 14 years old but Igi Maximo is now seriously involved, not with someone but with cycling.

This weekend, Maximo embarks on a daunting mission as he will compete in the Philippine Premier Cycling League in Manila.

Igi used to play football especially when his father Jonathan “Maxi” Maximo, an award-winning sportsman, was still president of the Cebu Football Association.

When his family got into running, he also goes out with them until he got hooked with cycling.

Between running and cycling, Igi’s dad felt his son loves cycling more.

After an impressive showing in "Tour Ni Frank" over the weekend, 14-year-old Igi Maximo (in black and yellow Livestrong jersey) brings his newfound sporting hobby to a higher level as he competes in the Youth Division of the Philippine Premiere Cycling League this Sunday in Manila. (The Freeman Newspaper)

Igi started out racing with both young and veteran cyclists during the weekly races at the Mandaue City reclamation area until last weekend when he faced his toughest challenge as a cyclist by joining the 8th RECYCLE-Luzvimin Cycling Series billed as “Tour Ni Frank”.

Although he was relatively new to that kind of competition, Igi bravely showed what stuff he’s made of and finished with an impressive standing, beating about half of the total number of riders in his class.

This weekend, Igi’s might will be tested further as he strut his wares in the youth division of the one-day PPCL action at the Macapagal highway. The event features an individual time trial (ITT), team time trial (TTT) and a criterium. – Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (FREEMAN NEWS)

CEBU, Philippines - After being left out in the cold during the opening day, the Cebuano riders led by Noy Jopson and Tyre Lambo bounced back with aplomb during the final stage to sweep the two titles available in the RECYCLE-Luzvimin-USA Cebu Cycling Series-Tour Ni Frank at the close of the two-day race last Sunday in Buak, this city.

Taking advantage of their familiarity of the route, Jopson and Lambo bravely pedalled their ways to the coveted ‘yellow jersey’ in class B and C, respectively.

The final day of the lung-busting race was also known as the “killer stage” as participants had to wade through a treacherous route from Toledo to the mountainous barangay of Buak via Transcentral highway.

Jopson actually landed only second in the road race but counting his sixth place finish in the criterium, he emerged as the best finisher overall in class B and became the rightful owner of the specially-designed Tour Ni Frank jellow jersey.

Jonas Ponseca got the top spot in Stage 2, while Leyte Cabugwason came in third.

It was exactly the same story for Lambo before he scaled the summit of success in class C.
Lito Quebec topped the road race, but it was not enough for him to clinch the overall supremacy.

Criterium winners Dondie Azarcon and Bitoy Daa, both of Team PLDT, were happy enough to finish the mountain stage. For them, it’s the experience they gained from joining the event that mattered most as they want to share it with their comrades when they go back to Bohol.

The 14-year-old Igi Maximo, the youngest entry in a strong field laden by veteran pedal-pushers, also conquered the mountain stage impressively. He tenaciously pedalled his way even on the steepest part of the road while others opted to stop or take a walk.

Meanwhile, Frank Gatdula, the chief benefactor of the annual race, extended his profound gratitude to all those who, in any way, have contributed to the success of the event. He made special mention of Ernie and Marrielle Hortaleza of HBC for sharing their transponder, an automatic timing device which was used for the first time in a cycling event in Cebu.– Caecent No-ot Magsumbol
