A NEW Cebuano junior cycling sensation is on the rise in Luis Miguel Maximo, who won back-to-back titles in the junior division of the second leg of the Philippine Premiere Cycling League (PPCL) over the weekend in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

The 14-year-old Cebuano from Paref Springdale dominated the 11-kilometer road race to defend his title over Allen Santiago and Rudolph Carolino, who settled for second and third places.

Maximo won the first leg of the race held in Manila last month.

In the team time trial, Maximo raced with the Youth Team and finished strong against senior teams.

“Igi’s participation in the weekly criterium at the Mandaue Reclamation Area with adults has helped with his endurance,” said his father Jonathan.

“The PPCL junior field is getting tougher as more and more racers are competing, particularly the triathletes. But the support Igi received from the Cebu cycling community really boosted his morale,” Jonathan added.

Also there to lend support to Maximo was Cebu’s top triathlete Noy Jopson, whose team, the Polo Tri Team, took the second place in the team time trial.

“He encouraged Igi and it really gave him confidence,” said Jonathan.

Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo was at his best anew in the national cycling scene as he successfully defended his title in the juniors division of the Philippine Premier Cycling League Round 2 last Sunday in Nuvali, Sta. Rosa City, Laguna.

The 14-year old student of PAREF-Springdale came in first in the criterium race as he bided his time before going all out in the second of the two-lap, 11-kilometer race.

He bested second-placer Allen Santiago and third-placer Rudolph Carolino.

He previously won the first leg of the circuit, which was held at the Macapagal Avenue.

Because of his success this year, Maximo has been invited to be part of the Liquigas Junior Cycling team, a developmental squad of the Liquigas company.

Aside from the criterium race, the juniors also raced in the individual time trial and team time trial races.

No results were released in the other two races as of press time.

A total of 274 participants competed in the second leg of the PPCL.

ESL

Igimax, a student of Paref-Springdale, defended his title as the best young racer in the criterium after outsmarting Allen Santiago and Rudolph Carolino, who wound up second and third, respectively.

The competition was very tough because more pedal-pushers joined the junior class, but Igimax showed grace under pressure on the way to top the 11-kilometer battle to the delight of his dad Jonathan and benefactor Zandro Fajardo of OZ Racing who personally flew to Manila to cheer for his ward.

Igimax also saw action in the Individual Time Trial and in the Team Time Trial under Liquigas Youth squad as a guest rider, but no results have been handed to them as of this writing.

The TTT, however, was more of an exposure for the young racers as they are competing against the senior cyclists.

Another decorated Cebuano cyclist Noy Jopson also took part in the contest and was a key player in pushing the Polo Tri team to a second place finish in the TTT.

"The PPCL Junior field is getting tougher as more and more racers are competing, particularly the triathletes," noted Igi's dad, award-winning sportsman Jonathan "Maxi" Maximo.  Igi's participation in the weekly criterium at reclamation with the adults has helped in his endurance.  Also, the support Igi got from the Cebu cycling community has been heart-warming," added Maximo. - Caecent No-ot Magsumbol

CEBU, Philippines - With all the heart-warming support given to him, promising Cebuano cyclist Luis Miguel “Igi” Maximo is raring to take another shot at glory in the Philippine Premiere Cycling League’s second round at Nuvali in Sta. Rosa, Laguna today.

Maximo will defend his junior division title after ruling the first round held at the Macapagal Avenue in Pasay City.

(Published in The Freeman Newspaper Feb. 21, 2010 Sunday issue.)

The Paref-Springdale football player-turned cyclist is doubly ecstatic about the race, not only because he is set to prove that his win during round 1 was just a beginner’s luck but also because he will now be sporting a new cycling outfit courtesy of Zandro Fajardo of Oz Racing.

Fajardo, a former motocrosser-turned businessman, saw the potential of Igimax, as he now fondly called in the Cebu cycling community, during the round 1.

Fajardo readily took a time out with Igimax’s father, Jonathan Maximo, and offered a sponsorship deal with the young pedal-pusher.

Fajardo had also been sponsoring the cycling apparel of RP standout mountainbiker Niño Surban for sometime now.

“Mr. Fajardo has expressed his desire to promote junior cycling and sees the potential of Igi as one of the young ambassadors in the development and promotion of cycling as a sport in Cebu and the country,” said Igi’s dad, Jonathan.

Aside from defending his title, Igimax will also compete as a guest rider in the Liquigas Junior Cycling Team, a developmental squad of the world famous Liquigas company here in the country and hope to improve his ranking against the big guys in the individual time trial.

Liquigas will race in the Team Time Trial which covers a total distance of 47 kilometers.

IGI MAXIMO continues his quest to make a name for himself in the national cycling community as he takes part in the Team Time Trial 47-kilometer event of the Philippine Premiere Cycling League today in Nuvali, Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

Maximo has been invited to be part of the Liquigas Junior Cycling team, a developmental squad of the Liquigas company.

Apart from this, Maximo, the son of former Cebu Football Association president Jonathan Maximo, will also be supported by the Oz Racing Corporation, which will provide the youngster with racing gear for his races.

The development came after Maximo's momentous win in the junior division title of the PPCL Round 1 last Jan. 31 at the Macapagal Avenue in Pasay City, which was witnessed by Oz Racing president Zandro Fajardo.

Fajardo then expressed his desire to promote junior cycling after seeing the potential of Igi as one of the young ambassadors in the development and promotion of cycling as a sport in Cebu and the country./CORRESPONDENT JONAS PANERIO

LIMPAG: CROSSING OVER

Published in the Sun Star Cebu Newspaper Feb. 15, 2010 Monday issue
FAIR PLAY Column
by Mike Limpag, Columnist & Sports Editor
Link: http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/limpag-crossing-over

NO I’M not talking about that darn show where the host supposedly talks with dead people.

I’m talking about Iggy Maximo and Jose Maria Navarro and other guys like them out there who have successfully crossed over to other sports.

Iggy and Jose Maria are footballers who have found success in individual events—Iggy, in road racing and Jose Maria, in running.

Iggy, the son of former Cebu Football Association president Jonathan and wife Sheila, still plays football, but lately, he’s a regular participant in running events and in cycling. He even won a junior category of a road race in Manila a couple of weeks ago.

His sister, Bea, took the other way around. She took time off from Manila, playing football, and managed to finish at No. 16 in the 21K women’s division of the Cebu City Marathon.

Jose Maria or Popoy, is the son of Cebu’s Michael Buffer, Rico Navarro, and isn’t too shabby, either.

I remember this kid scoring a ha trick in the 7-Under finals and banging the lone goal in the finals against Iggy’s team, Springdale, back in those good old days.

Now, he’s busy lacing his track shoes for the Sacred Heart School-Jesuits (SHS-J) team.

SHS-J is a relative newcomer in athletics, but thanks to coach Precing Capangpangan’s unique approach, the school is now reaping gold medals in the Cviraa.

Since developing runners from scratch would take a long process, the coach invited students who are into other sports to try the track and field team—guys like Josemaria.

And being natural athletes, crossing over was quite easy for them.

Being good in one thing is tough, being good in a lot of things, tougher.

This reminds me of a time in high school when our football game in the District Meet was postponed for a few hours.

You know why? Members of the opposing team were still playing basketball, a couple were in tennis, and a few were in track and field. I think they had eight guys who made the core of their basketball, football, volleyball and baseball teams.

We could have won by default, but since they were our neighbors, we just waited...

PaBol - PAa. Bike. BOLa.
The game for kids... of all ages!
